It’s been the new hit in town after the the old bopis, fishballs and other dumplings in Philippine foodcart business. No wonder why this calamares business is the new hit, the price is low and the cost is cheap. In the local markets, calamares costs about P250 or $5 per kilo. But why would someone start a business with a cost that big and a retail price so low.

The size of the calamares being sold is so big enough for the the retail price of P 3.00 per piece or P 10.00 per stick. Allegedly, the said molllusk was shipped from China and should be spoiled within the duration of the journey. Its being traded here in the Philippines for P 1200.00 or just $40 per sack or P 70.00 per kilo said GMA News

The reason why it is so cheap is because it contains Formaldehyde also know as “formalin”. I don’t have to explain this since almost all sane people know that formalin is used for embalming corpses. “KADIRI diba”. Formalin is a carcinogenic or a cancer causing substance.

There is also news from ABS-CBN that a Veterinary Medicine (VET-MED) student from UP Los Banos died by accidentally drinking a glass of formalin.

Other goods (are they really good?) that controversially contains formalin are white rabbit milk candy and 36 other candies with Chinese characters.

There’s no confirmation yet from DOH or any concerned government agency about this rumor. But, to be safe, refrain from eating calamares for the time being. I, for one, can’t control myself from eating.. masarap eh!

it could be true that this hot item in the street contains formalin. We have a neighbor who sells calamares in the city street and pre-cooks his merchandise before distributing it to his outlets here in our cauayan city… and oh boy, grabe ang baho. the first time i smelled it one early morning, akala ko may salvage victim na itinapon sa likod namin…
