Renaldo Lapuz – Filipino?

Posted on January 17th, 2008

American Idol 2008 (Season 7) started the year with a wham in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and in Dallas, Texas. In every season, the inventory of terrible auditions is always expected as much as the initial roster of contenders going to Hollywood.
In this Dallas audition episode, one stands among all those weird auditions in the past. Renaldo Lapuz, (watch the video below) which I believe is a Filipino, is also called the “Birdman” (bird man).

Renaldo Lapuz Birdman American Idol 2008 FilipinoRenaldo was the last man waiting for his moment outside the audition room. He didn’t sing a cover but instead an original entitled, “We’re Brothers Forever”. He didn’t wear a big bird outfit but instead, a winged feathered hat with the word “Simon” embedded in front plus a very shiny silver cape attached around his entire rear. This is really weird for an Idol audition. What’s even amazing, people bows to him, as he claims

You must have many admirers? I’ve never been bowed to,

says Ryan Seacrest.

It’s also evident that Renaldo Lapuz “The Birdman” really admires Simon Cowell. However, I find it really embarrassing when listening on to the first part of his performance. Truth be told, I am about to switch channels because I really want to avoid that feeling of embarrassment whenever someone is doing stupid on TV considering that I have a relative intuition that Renaldo is a Filipino.

He sounds Filipino; He’s racial features are Filipino and he talks like one. I’m still not sure if Reynaldo “The Birdman” Lapuz really is one but if he is, it’s really a disgrace to the Global Filipino Community…Ooops don’t fly into a rage yet, calm down and read the rest of this article.

Would you be happy seeing him on Global TV? At the last part of his audition, I was really astonished and entertained when Paula and Randy stood up singing with him in harmony. After a few moments, Randy went close to the audition rostrum and danced with Renaldo. Then Ryan, with no one with outside, entered the room singing and dancing after which, Paula then followed. All three danced and sang with “The Birdman” except for the forthright Simon Cowell.

It was the last audition for the day and it’s a NO for Simon. Of course, no one would be an American Idol with that kind of performance. Renaldo truthfully thanked Simon for giving a chance to people to sing to the whole world for free. And the day ended with Renaldo Lapuz receiving a big hug of appreciation from Simon.

Now I’m proud! I’m proud because it could be Renaldo’s first, but I’m sure, just like William Hung, it wouldn’t be his last. It takes a lot of guts to do that kind of stuff and be viewed in with more than 30 million American Idol viewers in the US alone and not including the global audience.

Honda Wave

He stood up without any shame and performed with an unusual outfit. At the end of the day, we wouldn’t realize that an ordinary man just did an extraordinary act by signing his own made original to the whole world. And this could be the reason why the “Birdman” wore that silvery cape with the feathered hat outfit.

“We’re Brothers Forever” Lyrics
by Renaldo Lapuz
I am your brother
Your best friend forever
Singing the songs
The music that you love
Brothers til the end of time
Together or not
You’re always in my heart
You hurt your feelings
And you will rain on mine
I love you brother

renaldo lapuz is pinoy. its because of his last name. his accent is similar to vietnamese, thais and other asian countries. but his name pegged him as pinoy.

    go ren…go ren.

    thats your stuff, men.

what he did is not criminal, so not a disgrace to pinas.

  15. Blogoloco on January 27th, 2008 at 3:41 am

  17. sagitar on January 29th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

That song is really for simon- it’s a ’subversive’ song, disguising himself he likes simon but try to analyze the last line (punch line) ..’ You’re hurting feelings, and you ‘ll reign no more’. That’s for simon. Renaldo is predicting the end and downfall of american idol and simon who hurt many people. Right?

So you needed validation from a bunch of whites to take away your feeling of embarassment at his performance? The dude’s got more class than you.

The popularity of this song lies in this irony: the funny circumstances of its birth belies a serious message that pulls on the heartstrings. Its message of brotherhood and peace comes at a time when war and conflict separates humanity. This song is like a thumb-on-the-nose on war and its utter childishness. But the funny thing is, instead of laughing, I actually cry when I hear the song. Ironic, isn’t it? This should be made the world’s anthem. Let’s spread the tune for its sheer message.

NOTE ON THE TROUBLESOME 9th LINE:
Actually, there are several versions on the internet. Among those that make the most sense and are most poetic are: “Your hurting feelings will reign no more;” “You hurt your feelings and you’ll be hurting mine,” and “You hurt your feelings and you will rain on mine.” Take your pick. Personally, I prefer the first one. How about you?

I’d rather listen to a person who sings off-key but with much passion than someone who could effortlessly belt out songs but fails to deliver the message.

He actually has confidence like most Filipino’s. They don’t care what other people think.
