Selecting a business from among the many that are viable requires finding a match between two things: (1) your particular interests and capabilities, and (2) what people will pay for in your community. Finding this match is vital to your success, and it is designed to help you find the best possible match. You can begin by making a list of those that hold the greatest appeal to you and in which you believe you could do well.

Being able to do a good job is a must in any business especially in the Philippines. A poor or even mediocre job usually guarantees that you won’t have return customers, but that’s not all. Sometimes clients and customers will refuse to pay for inferior work, and worse yet, an unhappy client usually tells at least seven other people what poor service he or she received. So first and foremost, you must be confident that you will be able to do a satisfactory—if not superior—job in whatever business you select.

Business in the PhilippinesObviously, having a background in the business and a track record of success would therefore be ideal. For example, if you have worked as an employee for a florist doing gift baskets and have received rave reviews on your work, you’re in a position to feel confident about your ability to do a good job in your own gift-basket business. Or if you’ve been doing bookkeeping on a salary for several years and your clients respect you and refer others to you, you’re certainly well positioned to start a bookkeeping service.

But what if you don’t like what you’ve been doing? What if you’re looking for a change or if what you’ve been doing can’t be done from home? You still have many options. You can look for a business in another field that utilizes skills similar to those you’ve acquired. For example, if you’re good at bookkeeping but want to do something different, you could look for businesses that involve financial management, attention to detail, or record keeping. If you are seeking a complete change, you can turn to hobbies or other interests and talents you have. When work repairing televisions dried up for

My friend, for example, his wife pointed out that he had years of experience cataloguing and indexing his extensive record collection and therefore might enjoy starting a book-indexing business. She was right. That’s exactly what he did.

In fact, while being good at your business is essential, our research shows it’s not sufficient. You also need to enjoy it. We think it’s profoundly sad that so many people feel they’re squandering the precious moments of their lives doing work they dislike. We also believe that a hefty percentage of business failures, physical illnesses, and addictions of mankind can be traced to choosing the wrong job or business.

And most important, succeeding as your own boss is almost always a matter of taking the initiative and going the extra mile despite the stresses that accompany any business. Picking a business you like and that likes you is essential to staying motivated through the ups and downs of being on your own. It could even mean your business or personal survival.

Besides, it feels good to wake up in the morning eager to get to work because you like your work so much. We believe one’s work should be stimulating, exciting, enjoyable, interesting, and fulfilling. And since your work is likely to be one of the primary ways you express what you have to contribute to life, your work should also be a platform through which you can give the best you have.

Therefore, in selecting a business, use your interests, talents, and likes and dislikes as a filter. If you are not fully confident about your ability to do a particularly appealing business, you can take the time to build your skills through practice, attending courses, or even apprenticing for a while before going out on your own.

I truly believe in this one…You’ve got to love what you are doing as otherwise everything else is bound for doom. As i always say…you’ve got to enjoy the ride…

This article would be helpful for those who want to start businesses…specially for those who are quite prone to simply listening to advices about what business would give them “the best bucks.”

We are all created differently. And more than likely what works for me may not work for another. A lot of people have fallen into this trap of buying a franchise simply because they say it’s like an RTW piece of clothing…or like a plug and play gadget. Honestly, it’s not. And if one is not really into this kind of thing, they easily get disappointed and they close almost as soon as they’ve openned.

Immature as it may sound, I think it’s always best to look at business as a game to be enjoyed to the fullest. Sometimes, you aren’t dealt all the good cards so you need to find a way to outsmart everyone else. That’s where all the fun starts. It is when you are challenged by circumstances that seem to be way out of your control that you get to know the kind of stuff you are really made of.
