Developing Your Business Identity
Posted on April 4th, 2008
Selecting the right name for your business may be one of the most important business decisions you make. If your name is memorable, distinctive, pronounceable, and understandable, it can be a valuable sales tool. On the other hand, if your name is hard to pronounce, confusing, and difficult to spell, it can actually cost you business.
Once you’ve selected your name, you need to create a graphic image for your business cards and stationery. Now that you’re in business, your cards and stationery are more than paper you use for correspondence. You should think of them as miniature billboards for your business. They create a first impression for people with whom you don’t have face-to-face contact. Some of the people you do business with may know you only through your stationery.
So think about your graphic image as part of your promotion and sales effort. Design your logo, cards, and stationery to make a statement about your business. Make sure they convey the image you want to create. For example, if you are a computer consultant, you might want to project a modern, high-tech look, so you could use a paper, type style, and design that convey a clean, sleek, and forward-looking image. On the other hand, if you are an errand service, you might want to convey a warmth and friendliness, in which case you may choose a paper, type style, and design that are rounded, warm, soft, and reminiscent of the familiar past. Don’t leave these important decisions up to the standard format at your print shop.
