Our National Language

Posted on August 26th, 2008

English has always been promoted as the medium of instruction in the Philippines. Because English has become the universal language so to speak, and to make the Filipino competitive, he should be able to communicate in this global language. However, this move has alienated us from own heritage which is our national language.

Up to these times, disputes are still ongoing as to what is our national language. It was Tagalog which was later changed to Filipino language. But this has been met with resistance by different regions claiming that Filipino is still Tagalog and that their native tongue is cunningly being pushed out of the picture.

Such maybe the downside having an archipelago with diverse cultures and dialects. The government came out with a program recently that this diversity is what actually unites every Filipino. Because not only are they recognized for their country, but more importantly the region they came from.

English maybe a global language, and we are one of the best English-speakers in Asia, but this should not alienate us from our roots. Our own language… proof of our being a Filipino.
