Filipinos Supporting McCain in the 2008 US Presidential Elections
Posted on October 27th, 2008
In a landmark election that will go down the history books as a first whatever its outcome will be, Republican presidential candidate McCain has found support among Asian Americans, despite the fact that Democratic candidate Obama has a background similar to theirs. Filipino Tove Ann Purificacion of Vallejo supports McCain due to his and his running mate’s pro-life stance as one of the main factors in her support and lauds the former prisoner of war’s military service. It appears that voters are taking the issue of race in their decision-making, thus giving Obama an edge. She cites the late Martin Luther King Jr. who once urged the country to judge others based on the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. Purificacion, a registered Democrat supporting McCain, feels that the Democratic party of present has gone beyond what her ancestors have supported giving as an example the party’s stand on same-sex marriage and abortion, hence her support for McCain.
Another McCain supporter, Apin Celones also of Vallejo stresses McCain’s military service and other qualifications as being superior to that of Obama’s. He warned against voting based on the emotional appeal and charisma of a political candidate as well as picking a candidate based on his/her race. Further, he said that color does not run a government but the person himself does. Moreover, an Obama administration would result to a Democrat-run government, as the Democrats at present control a majority in both chambers of the United States Congress for the first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995. He believes that this would not help create a healthy environment for debate. He further said that the Republican party has much that Filipino Americans can admire, especially its principal ideal of working hard to achieve success. Celones is the chairman of the Solano County branch of the Asian & Pacific American Coalition for McCain.
