Barack Hussein Obama made history by becoming the first black president of the United States of America, proving that America is indeed the land equal opportunity. Obama’s journey towards the White House actually started unofficially in 2004. After delivering his keynote speech to the 2004 National Democratic Convention, speculations sparked that he will run for the presidency which further intensifies after a decisive win in the US Senate Election in November 2004.

But Obama’s travel wasn’t a smooth one as he has to battle for party nomination against a more favored and popular Hillary Clinton before he was even able to face John McCain for the presidential race. Even on just the party level, campaign funds were already a great concern, because it can define the machineries that will be applied during the campaign period.

Obama’s campaign as well as his method of raising funds went out beyond the traditional method of doing things. Using The Long Tail theory in application, and harnessing the power of the internet, he was able to reach to more people, especially the younger generations, and by doing so he was easily able to raise more funds from supporters who were willing to share even just a small share.

Soon, fundraising activities were started even without the Obama camp commissioning them. The online strategies were effective as people soon started organizing themselves through different online social networks, creating groups, sites and even blogs to support Obama’s cause. The Obama website was created to provide people with the tools they need in organizing themselves and also served as a directory for anyone searching for events and groups within their locality.

The extensive use of technology – web videos, e-mail campaigns and online community sites to raise funds and expand network allowed Obama to focus on more important things – like honing his speeches, working on policies and engaging the media. Because of this he and his team were prepared always to handle whatever smears campaigns and other negative tactics that were thrown to them.

But more than all these, one of the greatest factor that brought Obama to the White House was the promise of hope and change that he brings with him. This is one of the main reasons why he was able to acquire support especially from the mixed-race minorities who all hope for better recognition under an African-American president.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world awaits as to how Obama’s promise and unorthodox methods can help America… and yes, the rest of the world too.
