Villar resigned as Senate President

Posted on November 16th, 2008

Manny Villar just resigned his position as Senate President. That’s one advantage of being online most of the time; you get to see the latest developments even before the newsbreak on TV shows them. The Inquirer site this afternoon was updated and one of their ‘Breaking news’ is Villar’s resignation.

What could be the effect of this to his bid for the presidency on 2010? Knowing how politics is being played in our country, we all know that there is more to this than just his resignation which Villar said was brought about by the fact that he no longer has the support of the majority of the senate.

Villar did a McCain by telling Senator Juan Ponce Enrile that he will support his presidency. Villar was replaced by Enrile as he was immediately nominated by Senator Panfilo Lacson who wasted no time in taking the opportunity to grab the most coveted position in the senate. This was immediately seconded my Senator Gringo Honasan. Yes, he is still in the senate.

Whether they admit it or not, Villar popularity was affected by the C-5 controversy which Lacson claimed was funded twice. This development definitely painted a new picture as far as the 2010 presidential election is concerned.

I’m sure, the palace will again be suspected in Villar’s ouster. Whether they are, or whether they admit it or not, will be another news in the making.

Aside from Villar, only MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay have announced their intention to run for president on 2010. The early announcement of an aspirant could work both ways, either it will be an advantage because they are running early in the race. Although they are not yet really campaigning, they can already organize and prepare their machineries, and come campaign period they are already prepared.

On the other hand however, they are exposing themselves to public scrutiny as well as to their political opponents. Villar’s ouster could be a product of such disadvantage. Were not really insinuating anything here, but we know that this early, politicians are already playing their game in preparation for the 2010 election.
