President Arroyo in time for the APEC Summit

After a brief interruption on their trip, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo finally departed from Osaka , Japan to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Lima Peru. Arroyo and her company left Manila last Friday for Peru, but they were forced to make an emergency landing in Osaka, Japan on Friday evening because her husband, First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo’s health condition.

FG Arroyo was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment due to an illness related to a chronic health problem. They spent the night at the medical facility because Mr. Arroyo needs to stay there for treatment.

Denying earlier reports that Mr. Arroyo suffered a heart attack, Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno has told reporters that Mr. Arroyo suffered stomach cramps and back pains instead. A television footage showed Mr. Arroyo conscious and seems to be not in severe pain, although he was on a stretcher while being lowered from the plane.



Puno also said that although already in stable condition, he needed to stay in the hospital for further medical attention. Although he was already cleared as of the latest report, he already flew back to Manila and arrived here on Saturday afternoon.

Because of this development, President Arroyo and the rest of the delegate were finally able to continue on their trip to Lima, Peru to attend the APEC summit. Although Mr. Arroyo was said to have been rushed to St. Luke Medical Center for further medical treatment.

The APEC Summit, which will be on its 16th occasion now, will be attended by leaders from its 21 member countries. It will start Saturday, November 22 and ends on Sunday, November 23, 2008.

Just in time for the start of the APEC Summit after a brief stop in Osaka, Japan, President Arroyo will push for the early conclusion of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Doha Round of Talks on Sunday.
