The global financial crisis has indeed caught the interest and concern of most Filipino. The proof of this is that the search volume for the word “recession” has an increase of 2,600 percent while “financial crisis” registered a 333 percent increase. This increase started when the global financial market started falling in September and October.

These data came from a study from online search tool Google Zeitgest.

Other consumer-related keywords searches have also increased, among them are; “sale” and “tipid” which both registered a 36 percent increased, and “free” climbing with 10 percent increase. “There were large increases in the number of searches… reflecting Filipinos searching more often online to find the best deals to save money,” Google said in a statement.

The Google tool Zietgest features the top trends in the Internet searches, the overall data showed that top searches for 2008 include the keywords “lyrics,” “friendster,” “you,” “games,” and “yahoo.”

And not surprisingly, keywords and phrases related to the Philippine’s boxing hero took five of the top ten slots for the fastest rising Google local news searches. Charice Pempengco and Arnel Pineda led the fastest rising searches for celebrities.
