The National Statistics Office will start to conduct the 2008 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI). This is a nationwide undertaking which aims to provide data on the structure and level of economic activity in the country.
With the help of the survey, up-to-date economic information will enable planners, both from the government and the private sector, to analyze specific industry structures and to evaluate business performance. It also helps in making effective plans and sound business decisions, as well as formulation of meaningful policies and appropriate market strategies.
The 2008 ASPBI, which is confined to the formal sector, will cover establishment which are engaged in agriculture, hunting and forestry; fishing; mining and quarrying; manufacturing; electricity, gas and water supply; construction; wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles, motorcycles and personal household goods; hotels and restaurants; transport, storage and communications; financial intermediation; real estate, renting and business activities; private education; health and social work; and other community, social and personal service activities as defined in the amended 1994 Philippine Standard Industrial Classification (PSIC).
Together with the 2008 ASPBI, the statistics agency will also conduct the 2008 Survey on Information and Communication Technology (SICT), which aims to collect information on the availability, distribution and utilization of ICT among industries and businesses in the country, and to generate indicators of progress that will aid decision-making, policy formulation and investment in ICT.
To conduct the survey, NSO conducted specialized trainings for NSO regional and provincial personnel who will be involved in the survey. They will personally deliver survey questionnaires to sample establishments, which they will collect after 10 days. NSO assured respondents that any information obtained will be held strictly confidential, pursuant to Section 4 of Commonwealth Act No. 591.
