Cebu Pacific will be opening a new route that could help boost the tourism industry of Northern Mindanao. The airline company will be having its Davao-Cagayan de Oro route.
Catalino Chan, tourism director for Northern Mindanao said the new route is a good connection for international flights to Davao City, which is now fast becoming Mindanao’s international hub, with direct flights from Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Davao City also serves as the country’s main link to the Brunei Darussalam – Indonesia – Malaysia – Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), Chan said.
With the new route, Chan said that the expected increase in tourist arrivals would definitely help push the economies of nearby tourism service-providing localities in Northern Mindanao such as Camiguin, Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte.
The new 50-minute Davao-Cagayan de Oro route was opened by the Cebu Pacific last Thursday, with flights every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The flight will be using a 72-seater ATR aircraft, and it will Davao City at 6 PM and to return to the city at 7:10 PM.
Before the new route was opened by Cebu Pacific, trips to Northern Mindanao would require travelers to fly to Manila or Cebu before they can fly either to Butuan or this city. For those coming from the Davao Airport, the only option then was land transport which takes about eights hours to this city.
Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. of Ozamiz City said that Cebu Pacific also announced that it would be opening a Manila-Ozamiz flight. This was confirmed by Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific’s vice-president for marketing and distribution, adding that the new route will start on June 16, with an Airbus A319 aircraft and it will most likely be service four times a week. Presently, only Air Philippines is serving a Manila-Ozamiz route.
