The Sky Gardens at the SM City North EDSA in Quezon City was launched last Friday, and it provides a welcome green space along the busy thoroughfare. But aside from its picturesque appearance, a noteworthy feature of the said park is its water conservation system that will be used in the country for the first time, which makes the maintenance of this elevated garden at the country’s most popular mall a sustainable endeavor.

The Sky Gardens, which took 14 months to construct, costs about P700 million, with P60 million of which went into the acquisition of the water conservation technology.

SM Prime Holdings president Hans Sy said that the park is more environment-friendly and different from other gardens because it uses a technology from Germany, and brought to the Philippines, to ensure sustainability in the use of water in its maintenance. “We’ve always been into long-term,” said Sy, noting that it won’t be long before water will become a scarce resource.

While other thinks that maintaining a garden would commonly require the use of plenty of water,  the Sky Gardens is different because this technology practically recycles water for use in the park.

Sy said that the technology has already been in existence for over 35 years, although it will be the first time that it will be used in the country. “We used a system that stores excess water in a facility installed underneath the park. We’re not throwing away any water, and because of that, we won’t be using as much water for the garden,” Sy said.

Other features of the park are the Roof Garden, the Sky Dome, water features, dining and entertainment outlets. The water features include two bubblers, a simulated river flowing at its center and waterfalls at its edge, which doubles as a screen onto which promotions and advertisement can be projected.
