Rubilen Amit, 10-Ball World Champion, Filipina
Posted on June 7th, 2009
The World Women’s 10-Ball Championship has just been concluded, and when the smoke has cleared out, a Filipina by the name of Rubilen Amit stands tall and proud as she emerged the winner, defeating two-time world champion Liu Shin-mei of Chinese Taipei. The 27-year-old lady from Mandaue’s victory was a sweet revenge. Two years ago, Amit was a losing finalist in the world 9-ball championship, and she was also kicked out of the national team.
Amit bested 48 other tough cue women players from around the globe to win the prestigious event presented by JBETpoker.net, Dragon Promotions and Bugsy Promotions, held at the Block at SM North in Quezon City.
Her victory put Amit in an exclusive club of Filipino world billiards champions that include Efren “Bata†Reyes, who won the world 9-ball championship in 1999 and 8-ball title in 2004, Alex Pagulayan, the world 9-ball in 2004, and Ronnie Alcano, who also captured the 9-ball and 8-ball crowns in 2007.
“I’m very happy that, finally, I realized my dream of becoming a world champion,†Amit said. She added, “I offer this victory to our country and to all the Filipinos, especially to those who have helped me and my fellow billiards players like our godfather Putch Puyat, coach Boyet Asosto, and Senator Manny Villar, whose Villar Cup provided me some sort of a training ground, especially when I was kicked out of the national team.â€
Along with her trophy, Amit also earned the $20,000 top prize at stake in the five-day events.
The road to the championship wasn’t a smooth one, to say the least, as Amit even lost in her first match against world no. 1 Kelly Fisher. But the lost did not hamper her spirit, she went on a winning streak afterwards, defeating anybody that came her way. Her casualties include the highly popular Jeanette “Black Widow†Lee.
With her achievement, Amit became the first woman to win the World 10-Ball title.
