Success in “lugaw” business

Posted on June 20th, 2009

We all know of the adage which goes “A little can go a long way,” and no one can attest to the veracity of that quotation than husband and wife Sherwin and Beverly Aquino, who started a small business cooking and selling “lugaw” (porridge) in San Pablo City just to augment the meager family income.

The couple’s business, which they called Lugaw Queen and with only P1,100 as initial capital,  now has nine branches and are considering of putting up even more.

Just like most successful businesses today, Lugaw Queen wasn’t the couple’s firm attempt at being entrepreneurs. They used to have a computer shop, but they decided to close it down in 2006 because it wasn’t profitable anymore. But even after closing the computer shop, the couple is still contemplating on having another business since their combined salaries isn’t enough for their needs.

An offer to rent a vacant four-square meter space came to Sherwin. It was from his boss in the fast food chain where he worked, and the space was beside the fast food branch. It was offered to him at P6,000 a month, which Sherwin initially declined because he thought it was too much for the small space.

But because of persuasion, the couple gave in. They negotiated however that instead of paying P6,000 a month, they would give P200 a day which they believe was easier for them.

Beverly thought of selling porridge because it does not require a big investment. Their first investment went into buying 3 chairs for customers, and the ingredients needed in cooking porridge.

And as fate would have it, customers kept pouring in, and from the initial 3 chairs, Beverly said they had to buy 10 more to accommodate more customers. Barely two weeks after they started, they had to put up another branch in San Pablo City to accommodate even more customers who wanted to try their “lugaw.”

Beverly believes that aside from the price and taste, their customers came to them since they value sanitation in their operation. Sherwin’s former boss at the fast food chain joined the couple and helped them expand the business.
