ATM precautions

Posted on June 29th, 2009

Depositors are being warned by the Bankers’ Association of the Philippines (BAP) – take extra care when using the automated teller machines (ATMs).

The recent case of ATM fraud in foreign countries, particularly in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has triggered the call for added vigilance.

The incidences reported of the personal identification number (PIN), card number, and other relevant information were captured by skimming the magnetic strip of the ATM card using a specialized scanner. These information then were use to create a duplicate ATM card, allowing the scammers to make unauthorized withdrawals without the knowledge of the cardholder.

The BAP issued the following precautions and advises cardholders to adhere to them for their safety in using the ATM:
-    Your PIN should never be divulged to another person, and if you think your PIN have been compromised, change it immediately
-    Cover the ATM keypad when entering your PIN, just in case there is a hidden camera attached to the machine. By covering the keypad with your other hand, the camera won’t be able to capture your PIN.
-    Be sure to cover the screen of the ATM while doing your transaction. Make sure that nobody sees the screen other than you.
-    Choose machines that are located in well-lit and secured areas.
-    Do not use the ATM if it appears to have a tampered card or cash slots. If you see anything suspicious, report to the corresponding bank immediately
-    Be conscious of your environment when using the ATM. Look around to check for any suspicious looking characters lurking around the vicinity. Ensure that the next person in line with you is keeping a safe distance.
-    Be wary of strangers who approach while using the ATM offering help. They could just be after your PIN and card number.
-    Before you leave the machine, be sure you have retrieved your cash, your ATM card, including your ATM transaction slips.

For assistance, be sure to approach official bank personnel or security guards. During off-banking hours, depositors may call ATM Hotline, the numbers are usually posted on the machines or flashed on the screens.

The BAP assures that they are taking all precautionary measures to ensure the safety of their clients. Still, they are urging people to take extra care when using the ATM. By being vigilant, there will be lesser chance for them to be victimized by any fraud.
