Obama- Silent about Neda

Posted on June 30th, 2009

There is a circulating photos and video in the internet about a good-looking Iranian girl who was in the streets of Tehran then was shot by a state militia. The girl was in a rally, crying for freedom in Iran and around the world. There is also a second video showing the Neda before she was shot last June 20. The girl was wearing a black gown standing next to a man wearing a blue stripped shirt who was known to be his father.

In Farsi, a Persian language (Persia is now known as Iran); Neda means the “voice.” The girl amidst the troubled times has taken center stage to shout freedom for the Iranians.

The girl was said to be holding a sign with a simple word which said “freedom.” Together with her father, they were peacefully protesting when she was shot right into the heart a Basij soldier.

Despite these events, a lot of people were surprised with US President Barack Obama’s silence with the issue. Some people think that almost everybody seems to realize that now we are in the middle of Iranian Revolution that the Americans feel obliged to support. What is happening in Iran is a struggle in democracy that is so important for the US to take action upon. But, the US president has not seemed to realize it yet.

The United States presidents have a history of fighting for freedom. It has been a tradition that can be traced back even in the time of George Washington. During the Second World War, Roosevelt had an alliance with Europe to fight for democracy. Ronald Reagan had famously demanded Mikhail Gorbachev and his evil empire to tear down Berlin Wall. And, because of suppressing their own people, George Bush labeled Iraq, North Korea as well as Iraq as “axis of evil.”

These presidents had taken the side of freedom. They had been brave to fight for what they think is right. People have different reactions with Obama’s silence on the issue, opting just to “monitor” the situations and seemingly ignoring the pleadings of Iranians who have held up signs pleading American for help. Questions on his decision from left and right are starting to pour in. Obama has been labeled an apathetic president, who seems to be afraid or reluctant to be on the side of historic struggle on fighting for freedom and democracy.
