Recently, another door of opportunity has opened up for the Filipinos and the people of Guam. Representatives of the private sectors of different businesses which are based on Guam were very happy to broadcast the formation of the Guam Philippine Business Council. The said council is an informal group of residents of Guam who have businesses on the said US territory and with businesses which have relationships in the Philippines.

Also, during the Guam Trade Mission Conference held last July 1, 2009, representatives of different businesses which are based in the Philippines gave their approval on the arrangement of a Philippine Guam Business Council. The council will be made up of ten members namely:

• Peter R. Sgro, Jr.- President and Board Chairman of International Group, Inc
• Franklin P. Arriola- CEO and Director of Pacific Rim Brokers, Inc.
• David Silva- General Manager of Century Insurance
• Oscar Miyashita- Managing Partner People/Far East Area of Ernst & Young and member of the Far East Area Executive Board.
• Nancy Ang Tan- Assistant Manager of FirstNet Insurance Company
• David J. John- President of ASC Trust Corporation
• Maureen N. Maratita- Publisher of Glimpses Publications
• Attorney Cesar C. Cabot- Partner of Cabot & Mantanona LLP
• Rene H. Ramos- Proprietor of MedPhar Pharmaceuticals, Inc
• Alfredo O. Antolin- President of Affinity Resources, Inc

The two business groups from the two countries have agreed in the formation of the council to further strengthen the relationships between Guam and the Philippines in terms of business relationship and commerce. Representatives of the two groups have distinguished the historical similarities and cultural resemblance of Guam and Philippines. The two counsels will work hand in hand to achieve their goal of helping both government and non- government entities to build up a closer business team up between Guam and Philippines.

The formation of these counsels is expected to open up more business opportunities from both the people of Guam and the Filipinos. It is expected to further strengthen the trade between the two countries and help to boost the economy of both countries especially during this time of economic recession.
