Scott Allen, one of the pioneers of social networking and social media for business, and co-author of The Virtual Handshake: Opening Doors and Closing Deals Online shares how he landed on Google’s front page for the keyword “entrepreneur”.

In 1992, the US economy recovering from recession and the demand for Windows-based computer networks was very high. Scott Allen, founder of The Windows Experts thought it was the perfect opportunity. Mr. Allen was deep in Windows networking knowledge, with expert certifications and experience that was unrivaled. Competition was feeble and distracted so he thought he had timing on his side. He took the plunge and established The Windows Experts.

In just a few weeks, client poured in. Most of them however, were small clients. Mr. Allen pursued big clients and when the State of Texas seemed to have the right blend of long-term projects, he left his small clients to work solely for them. However, just after a few weeks, the State of Texas reorganized and his projects were halted. Mr. Allen lost his biggest client and he no longer had small clients to go back to.

Mr. Allen and his wife evaluated the options they had then. They considered restarting the business with small clients but decided against it when they thought about the sacrifices they would have to make. So Mr. Allen shut down The Windows Experts.

He took a full-time job that took care of his expenses and permitted him to discover another passion. A few years after his loss, he launched Link to Your World, a full-service company that helps organizations transform virtual relationships into real business through leveraging social media.

Today, Mr. Allen is one of the top authorities on entrepreneurialism and is a frequent speaker on social media.
