Crash Course on Management

What is management?  As managers, what do we do?

F. John Reh, an author at About.com offers some basic information on management.

Management is an art as well as a science.  It is the art of turning people more effective than they were without you.  How to, is the science.  To do so, there are four things to remember:  plan, organize, direct and monitor.

Management begins with a plan.  Good management begins with sound planning.  You have to have a plan in order to succeed.  Find out what the goal is and identify the best way to achieve it.  Consider your resources, the strengths and weaknesses of the team and plan for all possible scenarios.

Once you have a plan, you organize.  You take care of the logistics and make sure everything is ready so the plan can be executed.  People should be given the appropriate training and proper support.  Everyone should understand that they have an important role to play to make everything a success.

Next, you direct.  You tell people what they need to do and when to.  You tell them to give their best in doing their part to make things work.

Then you monitor.  As everything moves, you have to oversee things to make sure everything runs according to plan.  Some things which are not part of the plan will happen so you would need to step in and make adjustments.

It is never easy to manage people but with study and practice, it can be done successfully.
