Viloria won over Iribe, retains IBF title

“The Hawaiian Punch” Brian Viloria wasn’t able to put out Jesus “El Azul” Iribe, but he still controlled the bout with his right hook and quick combinations to retain the International Boxing Federation junior-flyweight crown with a unanimous 12-round decision on Saturday at the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Iribe broke his right hand in the second round, but in spite of a broken hand, he was still able to hold the Filipino-American boxer off and reach the 12th round. Viloria was in control of the fast-paced fight throughout.

Viloria now improves his record to 26 victories and two losses (15 knockouts), while Iribe now has a card of 15-6-5 (9 KO) win-loss-draw record. The judges scored 118-110, 117-112, 117-111 all in favor of Viloria.

The victory was Viloria’s seventh straight and now, he is looking to set up a match with World Boxing Organization light-flyweight champion Ivan Calderon.

Viloria admitted feeling his opponent a lot heavier, and was able to take a lot of punches. The two fighters traded blows in the middle of the ring in the action-packed 12th round. Iribe even landed a jarring left hook to the body and Viloria retaliated with a left-right combination.

“Wow,” Viloria said. “Great fight. I hope the crowd enjoyed that.”

Viloria had the better of several exchanges, as he was the most aggressor for most part of the match. None of the fighter had their moments nor really got into serious trouble. Iribe’s trainer said if his fighter didn’t break his hand, he would’ve won without a doubt, which drew a smile from Viloria.

Alex John Banal and Dennis Laurente also scored unanimous 10-round decision victories over their respective opponents.

Banal defeated Mexico’s Jose Angel Beranza, while Laurente won over former world title challenger Zaid “El Exterminador” Zavaleta.
