Posted on September 9th, 2009
Established in 1950 to honor Don Carlos Palanca Sr., the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature is the country’s most prestigious and longest-running literary contest which “aims to help develop Philippine literature for writers to craft their most outstanding literary work; to be a treasury of the Philippines’ literary gems from our gifted writers; and to assist in its dissemination to the public, especially the students.â€
The Carlos Palanca Foundation have awarded early this month, 55 winners this year for the prestigious Philippine literary competition. 62 percent of the awardees this year are first time winners, while there were also new inductees to the Hall of Fame of the prestigious prize.
The distinction of being included in the Palanca Hall of Fame is given to winners in the literary competition who have won five first prizes in the annual awards, and who, at the same time, have consistently met the critical standards of the various boards of judges, and have maintained a reputation in literary circles worthy of peer recognition.
The new members of the Palanca Hall of Fame are essayist Reuel Molina Aguila and Poet Eugene Evasco, who are both professors at the University of the Philippines.
Evasco won his fifth prize this year for “May Tiyanak Sa Loob Ng Aking Bag†which was his entry for the newly introduces category, Tulang Isinulat Para Sa Mga Bata (poetry for children), while Aguila received his fifth prize for his piece “Ngunit Wala Akong Litrato Noong Nasa Kolehiyo Ako†under the Sanaysay (essay in Filipino) category.
