Korean company invests in online education in the Philippines

A Korean company invested an initial P100 million in the Philippines to set up its local subsidiary here, an online education company. Avalon English+ is one of the largest educational companies in South Korea, it recently sets up the Ubiquitous English Network of Avalon International Inc. (U-ENAI), an online education company teaching English with the help of breakthrough technology.
By 2010, the company is expecting to exceed its initial outlay with a projected capital of $3.5 million or roughly P170 million, once it completes its international high school in the Philippines. The company also has business ventures in an international education program in the US, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia , aside from its Emersion English in different countries around the world.
U-ENAI is duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2008 and is wholly owned by the Avalon English+. It is registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority as an information technology-based e-learning education company.
Chief executive officer of the company, Richard Hong said, “U-ENAI believes that the Philippines is the core stronghold for its expansion to the global market. Its highly competent English teachers and technically skilled workforce, favorable economic environment and business friendly government policies have been the cornerstones of our decision to make the Philippines our global base. This will help us aggressively pursue our vision of becoming the leading company in providing home school education to native English speakers as well as English as a Second Language to non-native English speakers.â€
The company serves more than 50,000 students at present. These are mostly based in South Korea, while the others are in other parts of Asia. It is looking at a potential market which is estimated to be at least 1 million students worldwide.
U-ENAI is also planning to offer, for a limited period, free e-learning programs to provide opportunities to Filipino students to experience new trends of learning online. The company is also encouraging local schools to send their graduates for on-the-job trainings and for a possible permanent job positions. Currently, it has in its employ 250 people in its Mandaluyong City office, this number is expected to grow to at least 1,000 early next year.
