Cory Aquino limited-edition stamps sold out
Posted on September 17th, 2009
The Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost) launched last September 8 limited-edition Cory Aquino stamps. And in record-breaking time, Philpost was able to sell over 70,000 of the said stamps. Because of this, the postal company is launching another set of limited-edition Cory Aquino stamps after the first edition stamps were sold out.
“We have not had a stamp that sells like hotcakes. The people are lining at our post offices to get their hands on [the stamps]. We hardly had enough to supply the request of the Aquino family. It is phenomenal,” said Postmaster General Hector Villanueva in a press statement.
The demand for the Cory stamps, Villanueva said, is “driven by the continuing adulation for the late president.â€
Alvin Fidelson, Philpost Information Officer said they will release about 300,000 of the second-edition Cory stamps nationwide on September 18. He said the new edition stamps will have the same designs as the first edition, but there will be minor changes on the position of the postmark and some texts.
The limited-edition stamps are considered a collector’s item and they are exclusively issued by Philpost branches. The se-tenant stamps (two differently-designed stamps joined side by side) bear a photo of Aquino flashing the “Laban†sign on the left, and a photo of her smiling on the right. The stamp photos were taken by Menchit Ongpin and Maco Ruben Trinos Malto II.
The cost of producing the stamps, Fidelson said, are shouldered by the agency, unlike previous commemorative stamps which are funded by a proponent.
In 1986, Philpost already issued special stamps for Aquino shortly after she was sworn in as President. The agency also issued commemorative stamps for Sen. Benigno “Ninoy†Aquino Jr. on his 25th death anniversary last year.
Philpost had also issued yellow souvenir sheets and 400 first day cover envelopes for the Aquino family and select guests.
