Because of the clamor of many Filipinos, especially who are working and cannot register during regular working hours, a resolution has been approved recently by the Commission on Election extending its working hours. In the resolution that was approved last Tuesday, the Comelec ordered all poll offices nationwide to stay open and provide services until 7 p.m. This is to accommodate the huge number of registrants for the May 2010 local and national elections.

In the same resolution, the Comelec also authorized all employees to work during Saturdays and holidays. However, there will be no overtime services which will be rendered on Sundays.

According to Comelec officials, the overtime work is necessary due to activities and administrative functions being done in connection with the resumption of continuing registration nationwide and in preparation for the May 10, 2010 automated local and national elections.

The commission officials are expecting eligible voters to come to local election offices starting next week either to register for the polls or request for precinct transfer. October 31 is the deadline set for those who wish to register and participate in the 2010 presidential elections.

At present, it is unlikely that the said deadline on month-end will be extended by the commission because it would delay other poll preparations, said Jose Tolentino, Comelec executive director.

According to Comelec official Teopista Elnas Jr., there are nearly three million new voters per record as of July 2009.
