Emergency employment programs for victims of Ondoy

To help the victims of tropical storm Ondoy in Metro Manila get a chance to earn, after receiving dole-outs for more than a week, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) have started an emergency employment program. This is aimed at helping those rendered jobless and homeless by Ondoy earn some money. The program will make use of the victims to help rehabilitate the community as they clean up the debris in roads and schools
For DSWD, they will have a cash-for-work program that will help about 50,000 evacuees earn P2,310 or P231 a day, for 10 days of doing “community clean-up†work. The department has already allotted P130 million for the emergency jobs program which will be funded from the road user’s tax, said Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral.
This emergency jobs program of the DSWD will be implemented in Metro Manila. The number of jobs that they will be offering per city or municipality will be in proportion to the number of families affected there.
On the part of the labor department, their emergency employment program will employ 1,450 workers for 15 days in Metro Manila, Central Luzon and Southern Luzon, the regions which were hit hardest by tropical storm Ondoy. Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said, “They will clean and clear up flood debris in roads and in schools.†He added that they will also help in the repair of damaged infrastructure such as school buildings and daycare centers.
The DOLE’s program seeks to benefit 100 workers each in Marikina, Quezon City, Pasig, Pateros and Taguig; 50 each in Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela in Camanava; and 50 each in Muntinlupa, San Juan and Mandaluyong.
