Pacquiao-Mayweather next?

Posted on November 16th, 2009

After the convincing victory of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao against the Puerto Rican powerhouse Miguel Cotto, the crowd were already calling the name of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and many would like the see these two boxers, Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. slug it out in the ring.

The Pacman already ruled out a third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, leaving him with probably no other option but to face Mayweather next. In an interview with CNN, Mayweather said he is ready to make the big fight against Pacquiao. He said, “If he wants to fight all he has to do is step up to the plate.”

Talks about the Pacquiao-Mayweather match, in fact, have already started to make it rounds even before the Pacquiao-Cotto fight. That is why, once this fight is set, it is said to break all existing records.

Pacquiao made history last Sunday by defeating by Cotto, he won his seventh world boxing title in as many weight divisions. He is, for the record, the only boxer who was won seven titles in seven weight division.

During a press tour last September for his match up against Cotto, Pacquiao said that if he and Mayweather win their respective fights, then their match is a go. As we all know, they both won their respective fights, and maybe all we are waiting now is the date, the time and the place of their fight.

One thing that could pose a big problem for this match up to become a reality perhaps is how they would split the purse. Mayweather for sure, would want the bigger share, and I believe Pacquiao, who have just established that he is the best pound-for-pound fighter, does not deserve anything less.

So, whether Mayweather ask for the sun and the moon, to avoid the fight and maintain his undefeated record, or agree for lesser share just to be in the same ring with the world’s greatest boxer, something we should all look forward too.
