With the seemingly assured victory of Benigno  “Noynoy” Aquino for the highest position in the country, the business groups in the Philippines have expressed their eagerness to support and work with the incoming administration.

Francis C. Chua, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), said “The business community welcomes who the people have chosen. We will work with whomever the people chose. We have to rally behind.”

Alberto A. Lim, executive director of the Makati Business Club Executive said that Aquino’s wide margin is boosting market sentiment and “takes a lot of the uncertainties away.”

And while Aquino was pictured by his critics as inexperienced, this pre-May 10 politicking is considered over by business leaders. They are now more concerned on the people he would be appointing to govern the industry.

Robert M. Sears, executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine said, “We are waiting to see who is on his team. That will set the tone for his government. While Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis Jr., president of the Philippine Exporters Confederation said that at this point, a strong mandate could prove more valuable for Aquino than experience. At least, he would inherit a relatively healthier economy, he said.

This was seconded by Chua who said, “We should not have too much problem as far as the economy is concerned. The new administration will just have to sustain the momentum.”

“It is mixed right now. There is no clear showing that Aquino will have control over Congress. It will be a problem that will have to be faced by the new president, how to get cooperation,” Ortiz-Luis said, as business leaders are now more concerned about how the executive and legislative branches would interact.

“What’s important is they work as a team,” added Edgardo G. Lacson, president of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines.
