Chana and FAW are Chinese-made car brands which are exclusively distributed in the country by Focus Ventures Inc. Now, the company is mulling the setting up of an assembly plant in the Philippines. President Stephen D. Sy of Focus Ventures said they are looking at a number of factors before they finally decide to proceed with their planned construction of an assembly plant.

“We have to ensure the volume. Also, we need to determine the best-selling models in the Philippines,” Sy said. He noted that one factor that is prohibiting them from proceeding with the plan is the uninhibited entry of Japan reconditioned vehicles.

At present, Sy said they are selling an average of 30 units a month. He followed that they will push through with the assembly plant once they hit 100 units per month sales. The company’s current best-seller is the Multi-Carry 1 model which retails for P280,000.

The planned assembly plant is capable of producing 200 to 300 units, and would require an investment of $8 million, Sy said.

Focus Ventures does well in the minivan category, and according to Sy, it is their niche market. He didn’t disclose the details as to the percentage of the company’s market share in the said category. In their website, it is stated that they sell 16 models from Chana and FAW. The two car brands, as Sy noted, are among the biggest manufacturers in China.

Chana, which is considered one of the biggest names in car and engine manufacturing in China, has its headquarters in Chogqing, southwest of China. It has also established joint-venture partnership with international auto leaders such as Ford, Mazda and Suzuki.

First Automotive Works (FAW), on the other hand, is a vehicle manufacturer backed up by its 50 years of experience in the automotive industry. They have been said to be at the forefront of China’s motoring industry and has partnered with established brands such as Volkswagen and Toyota.

A collaboration that was formed recently is now considered as the largest and most dominant force in the motorcycle industry in Asia. “The Great Asian Connection” is what they call this joining of forces between Kawasaki Motors Philippines Corporation (KMPC) and Indian manufacturer Bajaj Auto. This also underscores KMPC’s continuing faith in the Filipino riding public in spite of the global financial crisis.

Teench Layosa-Doval Santos, KMPC sales and marketing senior supervisor said “we are certain that the Philippine market is the primary beneficiary of this merger. When you combine the broad base of advance technologies of Kawasaki and the expertise of Bajaj, the product is a superb, reliable and dependably motorcycle out to create a totally new category in the market.”

Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), who is the mother company of KMPCS, was able to develop new technologies that have redefined space systems, aircrafts, jet engines, ships, locomotive, energy, plants, constructions machinery, and motivation systems, apart from a range of high quality, high reliability motorcycles.

Bajaj Auto, on the other hand, is the world’s fourth largest two and three-wheeler manufacturer, and its brand is well-known in over a dozen countries in Europe, Latin America, the United States and Asia. The two companies’ strength emerges with the launch of the Rouser 200cc.

Yoshihiro Tanigawa, president and chairman of KMPC said, “This product is just the start of a renewed relationship with Bajaj, which has produced one of our top sellers, CT100. We aim to give more choices for consumers to enjoy.”

“We believe that to be able to increase customer satisfaction Kawasaki has to work harder and provide only the superior products and services through the technology and strength of the Kawasaki brand. It will increase the enterprise value to the benefit of the customers, shareholders, and communities we serve.” Tanigawa added.

With over 95% of the country’s transport is running on fuel, Philippines is heavily dependent on imported oil and we are affected by the global rising of prices.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), a clean and cheap fuel for public vehicles will be encouraged to use by the government officials. Infrastructure and delivery stations are said to be built by 2011 but the contractual arrangement with multinational energy giants like Shell and Chevron Texaco limits the access to tapped supplies and raises doubts whether the government’s plan will be imposed or applied.

The use of natural gas has an effect on the nation’s standard living, from the retail price of nearly 50% to an inflation rate of 12.5% this August. Countries who use natural gas had saved energy import bills thus creating more economic and job opportunities. Thailand, for example is using CNG and it really helped their economy from estimated 82 CNG-fueled cars in 2000 to more than 70, 000 vehicles, they want to expand its CNG supply to meet the 100,000 vehicles run by the natural gas. While Thailand aims to manufacture and export CNG-fueled vehicles, Malaysia has 35, 000 CNG-fueled vehicles mostly taxis. In comparison, the Philippines boasts a mere 17 CNG-run buses and no gas-powered automobiles six years after prioritizing the use of natural gas for public transportation.

Estimated, there are 25.7 to 39.5 trillion cubic feet of untapped natural gas in the country but price policies thwarted those designs. In order to promote the use of natural gas for public transportation, Arroyo asked Shell-the multinational energy company which developed the country’s main CNG pipeline and first delivery station- for a “bare minimum” price. Shell arrived at a “break even” price of 15.42 pesos or $0.33 per liter last year unlike in Singapore which costs equivalent to 35-42 pesos per liter. It is said that bus operators could save between 250,000 to 1 million pesos in annual fee if they continue to use CNG.

Missed deadlines caused the delay of the opening of the first CNG station. Foreign investors and private transportation were then dismayed to learn that the supplies were reserved only for select local bus operators that had invested in the technology.

The source of the problem is the contract between the government and private developers as the critics says. The $2 billion Malampaya natural gas project located in deep waters off the northwest coast of Palawan island was first discovered in 1989 and said to be the largest natural gas source in the country. They point in particular to delays in the opening of the first CNG station, originally scheduled for 2005 but not completed until earlier this year. Roberto Torres said, “First Shell said there was a problem in the compressor and then there was a problem in the safety features.” Roberto Torres is an aggrieved bus owner who invested 30 million pesos in CNG-fueled buses but have not yet go on the road because of CNG shortages.

Cris Rea, manager of HM Transport – A CNG bus company- has said that even now the newly opened station is often unreliable or shut down due to technical glitches. Other energy companies have expressed interest in investing and building daughter CNG stations, but the Malampaya consortium has refused access to the supplies, said one energy consultant who requested anonymity.
Investors such as Energtek, keen to help convert polluting three-wheeler vehicles to cleaner natural gas, have been turned away despite the fact the sole CNG station is running at under 10% capacity. Complexities in the government’s contract limit the fuel’s distribution to a handful of CNG-run buses.

“Why does the government can’t force the consortium to make CNG gas more widely available?” said Edwin Fernandez, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board consultant, despite the fact that it is part of the minority holding of the Philippine National Oil Company. Also, Behag added that the consortium must recoup its investments, which included the development of a 504-kilometer underwater pipeline to transport the processed gas from the platform to Batangas province.

Shell is reluctant to open the station for other users since it was not part of the said agreement with the government. That is why the only one existing CNG station was running at only 10% of its capacity.

The Government said to build an alternative 420 km. pipeline rather than deregulating CNG prices and encouraging consortium to expand this will ensure private user access in Metro Manila by the year 2011. Mariano Salazar, Energy undersecretary has said that part of the government plan is to establish 21 more CNG filing stations but he failed to address where the financing and technical expertise would arise.

Car sales this year increases in spite of soaring prices of diesels and fuels. Although recent months sales have declined, the car sales in the early part of the year created more than just a cushion that causes still a net increase from prior year’s sales. The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (Campi), credits this higher sales to the US dollars remitted by the OFW and the growing middle-income market in the country.

Alfonso Salcedo Jr., president of BPI Family Bank, one of the leading banks in the car loan sector noted that while there is an increase in car sales, the car types that get sold more has shifted from SUVs or bigger vehicles to that of smaller cars. “There has been a very noticeable shift in preference to smaller cars. It’s what’s driving the industry, the under one-million peso cars” Salcedo said.

It’s the big sports utility vehicles (SUVs) that are greatly affected by high fuel costs as the market is shifting to low displacement engines, according to Daniel Isla, first vice president for marketing and sales of Toyota Motor Philippines Corp.

Topping the sales from January to July this year is Toyota Motor’s Vios which is priced below P600,000 each at 6,215 units while Honda Car’s City ranked second in the small passenger car sub-compact category.

Toyota Innova with a retail price around P800,000 leads sale for MPV or multi-purpose vehicle at 6,094 units. MPV’s are getting more popular because of their dual purpose, either for family use or for business.

Toyota’s Avanza is next on the MPV category with 3,317 sold units at a tag price above P500,000 per unit, followed by Isuzu’s Crosswind at 3,219 units. Mistubishi’s Adventure comes in forth with sales of 3,091 units.

Hyundai.’s Getz, priced below P600,000, meanwhile, leads the sale of small passenger car hatchback category with sales of 1,573 units in the seven-month period. SUV’s aren’t totally pushed out of the picture, as they are still the vehicle of choice for the more moneyed buyers. Toyota’s Fortuner, a P1.3 million vehicle, leads at 3,226 units, followed by Honda’s CRV at 2,132. Coming in at third with sales of 1,288 units is Ford’s Everest.

It’s been years when I decided to get rid of my old car because of soaring gas prices here in the Philippines. As I look for a new one, I suddenly came across through a new player in the market with a new brand. Imagine a vehicle that would have as much as quality compared to the ever famous industry players like Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Honda but with about less than 30 to 60 percent of the price. The Chery Car is also called by the many “Cherry Car“. In the Philippines. It is really hard to look for the type of vehicle that would go well with the skyrocketing prices. I myself and my company having found Chery car (Cherry Car) in the Philippines view it as a match made from heaven.

During the sales process, I was pitched that the car would go about 15-20 Kilometers per Liter and at that time the price of gas was about around 58 Pesos per liter. So I gave it a try. Best of the news It gave me around 19 Kilometers per liter for highway driving and around 15 to 16 Kilometers per Liter on city driving. Imagine the money our company saves every month and every year because of its fuel efficiency.

I decided to purchase more Cherry cars after a month since my sales agents are usually driving around Makati, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Ortigas and Quezon City where business is at its peak. Even though I live in the south of Manila (Paranaque and Las Pinas), I still manage to go and take a trip to the far north (Pampanga, Tarlac and Pangasinan) to visit my other friends and relatives at least once weekly during weekends.

Also, I realized that in the future. I will have no problems with the car parts since Chery has lots of parts distributors natiowide.

So long for the ever famous Toyota Vios and my other Mitsubishi which go around from 10 to 12 Kilometers per Liter. If you have any questions about this car. You may want to call their offices.
