The Department of Education (DepEd) issued a memorandum laying the school calendar for this year, including the opening date of school year 2011-2012 which will be on June 6.

Secretary Armin Luistro of DepEd said the total number of school days would 202, and the last day of the school year falls on March 30, 2012. He also issued instructions to all public school heads to ensure that at least 180 of the 202 school days be actual “teaching-learning days.” T

“The 180 days shall represent the actual teaching-learning days which all schools shall strictly adhere to,” Luistro said.

The memorandum he signed reads, “The remaining 22 days of the total school days shall be utilized for national and local events and celebrations; national, division and regional achievement tests; contests/activities authorized by the Regional and Central Offices; and class suspensions due to natural calamities and disasters.”

The DepEd secretary also said that it is compulsory for public schools to follow the school calendar. “Private schools may opt to deviate from this calendar provided they do not start classes earlier than the first Monday of June and not later than the first Monday of August as provided for in Republic Act No. 7797,” he added.

But while private school may deviate from the DepEd-issued school calendar, Luistro ordered them to implement at least 180 school days of their school year for actual teaching-learning days.

Luistro also discussed the first phase of implementation of the DepEd’ ambitious K (Kindergarden) + 12 Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) plan and bewailed the loss of many school days because of unnecessary celebrations of various events or conduct of various competitions or contests.

The K+12 program seeks to add two years to the current 10-year BEC, which is composed of six years of elementary and four years of high school. DepEd figures place the number of public elementary schools at 38,351 and public high schools at 7,274 while private elementary schools number 7,084 and private high schools 4,707.

The Brigada Eskwela 2011 was set on the week of May 23 to May 28 to prepare the public schools for the June 6 opening. Brigada Eskwela or the National Schools Maintenance Week, is where the community and the private sector together with the parents, are pushed to contribute and participate in the cleaning and refurbishing of public schools in their areas.

A new business process outsourcing (BPO) firm has chosen the Philippines as the location of its latest service center. US-based Cybernet-Slash Support (CSS) recently opened its 1,000-seat facility in Taguig, its first Philippine site and currently has 400 employees. CSS said the new facility will be used for the company’s outbound sales, technology and other integrated BPO services for clients in North America. It plans to increase the number of employees in Philippines to around 2,000 people by the end of 2010. The company said it is in line with the company’s aspiration to emerge as a strong player in the country’s BPO space.

CSS’s chief executive Nick Sharma said they choose the Philippines as the site of its newest facility because of the “highly conducive” business atmosphere and talent pool of experienced BPO professionals. “The Philippines has emerged as one of the key global hubs for the BPO industry,” Sharma said. And thus, they felt that now is the most opportune time to expand their capabilities in the Philippines and extend their “portfolio of superior, effective support services to customers.”

Sharma said that CSS have committed $15 million in its budget to develop their business in the Philippines, and see it as their biggest facility in three to four years time.

They would be planning to hire mostly computer-related or engineering graduates who will be expected to provide their clients with both technical and customer support. Most of their clients are in the information technology, retail and healthcare sectors.

With its based located in San Jose, California, the company employs around 4,000 people working out of its global operations centers in India, the US, Poland and now, the Philippines. American telecommunications giant Alcatel-Lucent and tech firm Sun Microsystems & Blackboard Inc. are just two of the big-ticket clients of CSS.

JobsDB.com, one the premier online jobs search website came up with the “hot” jobs that Filipinos should apply for 2010. These include nursing, accounting, teaching, and even dog-handling. According to Jayjay Viray, managing director of JobsDB.com, while nurses and accountants continue to be in demand next year, other not-so-popular, but surprisingly high-paying jobs should also be looked into by Filipinos.

Viray said that dog-handling and security-related jobs are third on their list of “hot jobs” for next year. “Just for the Middle East, we’re seeing a demand of about 10,000 dog-handlers,” she said. According to her, a dog-handler in Middle East could get a monthly pay of as much $2,500.

One of the reasons for this, Viray said, is the continuing global fight against terrorism and security consciousness. This, she said, is pushing the demand for dog-handlers, especially those who handle bomb-sniffing dogs. “In the Middle East, security is a serious concern for many of the well-off people there,” she added.

Even here in the Philippines, there is also a demand for dog-handlers. Viray said that this is evident by the presence of bomb-sniffing dogs in the malls and in buildings.

Meanwhile, information technology (IT) is top on their list of “hot jobs” for 2010. IT workers “will still be the most in-demand locally and overseas,” she said. With many internet businesses being put up and numerous companies going online to do their selling and promotion, the demand for IT employees would still be strong.

Those who are skilled in search engine marketing and search engine optimization would be the most sought after IT workers, said Viray.

She also noted that jobs becoming in demand are those that look for skills that could be acquired by taking up short-term or vocational courses.

A certificate in dog-handling can be acquired by attending a short course could last only for six months. IT workers, on the other hand, could be a computer technician by taking up a vocational two-year computer technician course.

Presidential Consultant on Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III said the only solution to fight poverty is entrepreneurship. “The greatest problem is poverty and the only equalizer is to give these kids education,” he said.

That is why the government, in partnership with the private sector, has initiated a project that would teach millions of out-of-school youth (OSY) nationwide to become entrepreneurs to help reduce poverty incidence in the country.

The initiative will see the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the National Youth Commission and the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship-Go Negosyo embarking on a project that aims to create a framework on mentoring OSY on entrepreneurship. The said project is funded by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) with a grant of $97,610 or P4.7 million.

Gerelyn Balneg, director of the DSWD’s Policy Development and Planning Bureau said, “The framework could be used a guide or a reference by APEC-member countries in providing the necessary assistance for coaching the OSY.”

The program is a three-day seminar workshop participated in by young entrepreneurs from the country, as well as other APEC member-nations like China, Japan and Indonesia. Balneg said various government and non-government agencies are utilizing the framework used by the business sector in their programs for the OSY.

Balneg said, “We have to understand OSYs also have some peculiar needs or development requirements that may not be necessarily fit in the framework used right now by the private sector.”

“They have high potential in being entrepreneurs… but only if the necessary support mechanisms are in place. Funding is important because while they may have the capacity to develop businesses, if they don’t have the necessary financing that would really not be realized,” she added, pointing out to the need for government agencies and the private sector to develop a micro-credit mechanism that can be accessed by the OSY to finance their business proposals.

Henry Ford worked for Edison Illuminating Co. in Detroit as a chief engineer. He wanted to be part of the company’s vision of a bright new future which motivated him to devote his spare time to build a crude machine of two bicycles placed side by side and motorized by a gasoline engine that he called “Quadricycle.” The first ride in his “quadricycle” was with William H. Murphy, a lumber tycoon in Detroit. After proving the machine’s success, they found themselves into the industry.

Ford was the superintendent in charge of production of the Detroit Automobile Company which opened in 1899 after nearly a decade of working in his “quadricycle.” Ford couldn’t build a car fast enough to keep the company in the business so the ventured only lasted a year. Ford then came up with another plan on how to spread the word about his car and his name- by building a racer. With the success of his racing ideas, by 1903, he was able to catch the attention of the benefactor he needed to start his own company, the Ford Motor Co.

From a wagon factory, he converted it into a shop and started building, with the help of his hired workers, his new design, the Model A. In July of 1903, a Chicago dentist was the first buyer of his Model A. After a year of production, Ford Co. has sold more than 500 units of Model A cars.

During that time, only the wealthy can afford the carriage without a horse because other automakers were only building luxury-laden automobiles. Henry ford said, “I will build a motor car for the great multitude…it will be so low in price that no man will be unable to own one.” With this vision, he built the Model T which is more reliable and cheaper to build. In 1908, “Tin Lizzie” the nickname of Model T, went on sale. The company even declared refusal of orders because they could not meet the demand anymore. With the problem that the company had faced on satisfying the demand, it became a new challenged for Ford.

Ford addressed to this problem by creating an assembly line. He reasoned out that building automobiles can be quicker and more efficient if each worker would remain in one designated area while performing one specific task. In August 1913, dragging a chassis by rope and hoist across the floor, the new way of mass production was born. The new system had cut into half the twelve and a half hour production time of the old system. With a year of refining and perfecting the system, Ford had reduced the production of a car even more into just 93 minutes.

But another problem arose, the burnt out of his work force. Due to problems in the turnover rate the company had to employ nearly 1, 000 workers for every 100 jobs that it wanted to fill. Ford then decided to compensate his employees each of 5$, almost twice of their recent rate that resulted to flooding of workers to the company’s gate.

With the thought that the stockholders are hinders to his plans, by 1919, Ford bought all his stockholders out. Then leading the company as he opted, he explored other business enterprises including constructing tractors and a single- passenger plane, mail route, and as well as the first regularly scheduled passenger flights. Among his ventures, the grandest was a factory built in a 1,096 acre plant on the Rouge River. The Rouge was one giant machine in itself and was the largest industry complex during its time.

Solving his problems and being able to cut the price of his cars into hundreds of dollars, Ford had achieved his two aims in life of bringing the pleasures of automobiles to several of people as it can be and to provide high paying jobs to lots of people.

The start of classes on June 1 will definitely push through, and the Department of Education (DepEd) will not suspend nor move it to a later date even with the first confirmed case of Influenza A(H1N1) in the country. Education Secretary Jesli Lapus has received assurance from Health Secretary Francisco Duque III that there is no need for the DepEd to postpone the opening of classes.

For their part, Lapus said that their department is preparing a massive information drive on A(H1N1). Public school teachers and officials have been ordered to review the Department of Health (DOH) advisory on A(H1N1) and relay the information to their students, as well as to the parents. “We want teachers to educate the students as well as their parents on Influenza A(H1N1),” Lapus said.

The World Health Organization (WHO), on the other hand, has noted that Influenza A(H1N1) seems to affect young people, but did not make it clear whether the effect were because of the nature of the virus, or because there is a bigger possibility of it to be passed around among students in the close confines of schools.

Some countries have suspended classes because of the outbreak. Japan, which saw a surge in its cases o A(H1N1) infection, have cancelled classes in hundreds of schools all over the country.

However, as far as the Philippines is concerned, the health department said that there was no sign of widespread outbreak in the country, and therefore, there is no need to suspend the opening of classes on June 1.

According to WHO officials, the Philippines had “quite a good surveillance system,” which prevents the entry and spread of the disease here. Soe Nyunt-U, WHO regional representative however said, “there is no guarantee that this will be the last case” of A(H1N1) in the country, as he cited the large number of people who are travelling from North America to the Philippines.

Bulacan State University (BSU) which is known to be one of Bulacan province’s leading tertiary education institution, has now incurred approximately P7 million in losses due to unpaid scholarship grants. This is according to the four-page Audit Observation Memorandum dated February 9, 2009 by Bernardo Garcia, supervising auditor of Commission on Audit (COA)

The said loss was caused by the accumulation of accounts receivable to P7,158,809 from several scholarship benefactors. Out of the P7,158,809 worth of unpaid scholarship grants, 81.67& or P5,896,843 has been incurred from2007 to 2009 by the scholars of Wilhemino and Victoria Sy-Alvarado, vice governor and first district representatives of Bulacan respectively.

In the findings of COA, Alvarado’s scholars were not able to remit to the BSU the tuition and other expenses of their scholars for the second semester of school year 2007-2008 and for the first and second semesters of school year 2008-2009.

“We recommend that the accounting division closely monitor the collection of these scholarship grants to avoid an accumulation which in result in bad debts. A written document with the scholars’ benefactors must be executed to bind them with their obligation and ensure prompt payment,” the COA said.

The COA also recommended that the accounting division of BSU should prepare an accounting entry to recognize the unpaid amount of P7,158,809 as accounts receivable and accordingly adjust the affected income statement.

While the said obligations have not been paid, the BSU could do some measures to cope up or at least prevent the financial loss of the institution. The COA said that unless the grantors pay their obligations, BSU scholars will be trimmed down to prevent continuing financial losses of the institution.

High school students from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) – Diliman are doing the country, as they win the 2009 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) in Hawaii, a victory that earns them a ticket to compete in Atlanta, Georgia for the Robotics world championship on April 16 to 18. FIRST stands from For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology

The team, composed of 20 high school students who called themselves Lagablab, bested six other high school teams from the US, they are the lone Filipino Team and the only participants coming from the Southeast Asia region. They are taking up Robotics at PHSH – Diliman as an elective.

Being first timers in the competition who get the highest seed at the conclusion of the qualifying rounds, they won the Highest Rookie Seed Award. Together with this award, they also won the Rookie All-Star Award, an award given to a new team composed of exemplary young students but who possess strong partnership effort and implementing the mission of FIRST to inspire students to learn more about science and technology.

The Rookie All-Star Award earned for them a slot at the Robotics finals in Atlanta, Georgia.

Their robot entry, which they called “Larry Labuyo”, uses a special kind of wheel rolling over regolith, a material which is almost frictionless. Labuyo was ranked 17th out of33 competing teams. Other countries who were also in the competition were United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Mexico, Turkey, Israel, Brazil and Chile.

Let’s all wish Team Lagablab good luck and cheer for them as they carry the country’s flag in the upcoming Robotics finals in Atlanta, Georgia.

Google has just announced the opening their Google Summer of Code 2009 program and is now accepting applications from university students who wish to participate in the program. Applications will be accepting applications until April 3, 2009.

The program was first launched in 2005 and it familiarizes students with open source software developments by offering student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects.

The Google Summer of Code or GSoC is the company’s flagship program that matches university students interested in programming with international open source organizations. Their goal is to increase the world’s supply of open source software and at the same time providing young computer programmers with inspiring, meaningful summer jobs or extra-curricular activities.

Supporting Google with this project are big names like MySQL, Creative Commons, Mozilla, Apache, the Linux Foundation, Apache, and more who are all raising up the $5M required to fund the program. They will be mentoring the student-participants throughout the whole of the summer and giving them a chance to be exposed to real world problems.

Leslie Hawthorn, Google Open Source Team and GSoC program manager said “we are particularly excited by the social ties and industry exposure our student participants get through the course of the program.” He also added “we’ve connected students and mentors in different countries around the world and hope to get university students from even more places, including the Philippines, into the Google Summer of Code community this year.”

Despite the effect of global crisis and with number of multinational companies closing down because of this, business process outsourcing (BPO) still continues to be one of main source of employment for Filipinos especially during these times. More and more international call center providers look to the Philippines as viable location for a call center because of the lower cost of labor and maintaining such business here.

However, in spite of the existence of employment opportunities, a recent study showed that there are only a few college graduates who qualify for the available positions.

The report, which was submitted by the Universal Access to Competitiveness and Trade, shows that there were only a few percentage of college-graduate applicants who were interviewed and screened by Filipino and multinational BPO firms who passed and were actually hired.

The reason cited for this is the inadequacy of English proficiency and other required skill of the graduates. UACT is the research think-tank of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI).

UACT’s finding on the country’s Offshoring and Outsourcing (O&O) Industry showed that “for every 100 applicants, only six to ten percent are effectively recruited and deployed for an entry level job.” The assessment report was already submitted to the Presidential Task Force on Education (PTFE), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESTDA), and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

UACT said, once this “deficiency” is addressed, the O&O sector could be a good job provider to the hundreds of thousands unemployed college graduates because BPO firms require college graduates for entry-level positions.

Our country has been known for our English proficiency. It is unfortunate that multinational corporations (MNCs), which include BPOs, find most applicants to have lower English proficiency levels, which is contradictory to what we have been recognized before.

Efren Peñaflorida didn’t have to do spectacular things. He didn’t jump from tall building or rescue a cat from the tree, but Efren, Filipino, received citation from international news agency CNN as a modern-day hero.

When he started his mission, Efren wasn’t thinking much of getting any recognition – much less from CNN. He just wanted to give back what he thought was given to him – education and hope for poor children.

With his pushcart loaded with crayons, books, pens, clothes, jugs of water, a blackboard and a Philippine flag, Efren would be seen at the public cemetery, market and dump in Cavite City where he, and a group of young volunteers, teach street children basic literacy skills and values to save them from illegal drugs and prevent them from joining gangs.

Efren’s advocacy was borne out of his own experience, being a victim of gangs when he was in high school. He knows by heart what poverty can do, and that is snatch children out of school and lead them to violence.

Efren’s group, Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) was formed by him and his classmates at Cavite National High School back in August 1997. It was a time when teenagers like him were being forced to join in gangs which gets involved in riots. He was only 16 then.

They formed the group as an alternative to the numerous teenager gangs. He said he and his friends “got the idea to divert teenager like us to be productive.”

Initially, they were only bringing food for the children, but they soon realized that the problem was more than just empty stomachs and so they start to hold literacy classes every Saturday. They carry the books and blackboard with the help of a bike and a sidecar which the group bought.

They were able to raised funds from selling junks they collect.

But since the tires would always run flat and the chains fall off, the current DTD president then proposed to use a pushcart instead.

More than ten years later, Efren Peñaflorida, now a teacher in high school in nearby Bacoor town, still continues with his mission. And with more volunteers to help him, some of whom were former street children themselves who’s live were touched by Efren’s advocacy.

“you are the change that you dream and I am the change that I dream. And collectively we are the change that this world needs to be” were always Efren’s words to his volunteers.

Microsoft Corp., through Microsoft Philippines has entered into a partnership with the University of the Philippines (UP) in an effort to boost the local economy through the various student-faculty programs housed in one IT hub. The IT hub, which will serve as a seed bank of new ideas will be called the Microsoft Innovation Center.

The help is geared in helping students and startups gain access to the latest tools utilized in the industry and promote technopreneurship by providing training to enhance their business acumen.

Microsoft Philippines Managing Director Rafael Rollan said “it is in the schools where the good ideas are coming from and UP is one of our top choices.” He added “we’ve always believed in the capability of Filipinos to compete with developers from around the world and through the Microsoft Innovation Center, we hope to give our student developers an early start.” Rollan disclosed a previous study sponsored my Microsoft revealed that the Philippines has the most number of students studying science, technology, engineering, math and design in southeast Asia.

Tim Vergel De Dios, Microsoft Academic Developer Evangelist, said that aside from technopreneurship training, students who are training in the center can also have the opportunity to test Microsoft applications that are still at the beta stage. They also have other projects lined up at the center like “Training the Trainers” program for teachers and the local Imagine Cup Student Competition for technological innovations.

“Through the Microsoft Innovation Center, relevant business and industry software solutions are being developed by individuals even if they are still in school,” he said “This is where tomorrow’s developers are being trained so they may reach their full potential as IT professionals.”

De Dios also sees the center as a launching pad for the Dreamspark and BizSpark initiatives that promote growth in the industry and open up new opportunities for individuals and Filipino businesses. The two programs provide students and SMEs free Microsoft software to help jumpstart careers and businesses.

The Microsoft Innovation Center in UP Diliman is the second to be launched in the Philippines. The first MIC, which focuses on mobile phone applications as well as research and development, is housed at De la Salle.

The Philippines Educational System is in constant deterioration. Budget about this sector are being allocated each year, but how come it seems to be not improving? There’s a lot of reason for this. Thanks to the Philippine Business for Education’s (PBEd) initiative in improving the quality of education in the country.

According to them, the business community must work hand-in-hand with the government, since, the government cannot fulfil its duties in providing best education for its citizens.

The PBEd was actually introduced by a group of CEO’s who shared the same thoughts about the increasing illiteracy rate of the country. They discussed some points on how to remedy this problem. Policy recommendations, financial assistance grants, improvement in facilities of schools and improving the teaching methods of the teachers are some of the proposed plans to achieve PBEd’s objectives.

As cited by them, they should join the civil society, communities, other business community and the government with regards in finding solution for the said problem.

Their initiative were excellent. Since the government cannot do it alone, private interventions would be a necessity. With regards to this, I realized san equation that will best describe what the PBEd’s objectives are.

EDUCATION + FROM THE GOVERNMENT = BAD GRADUATES
BAD GRADUATES = UNPROFESSIONALS = BAD WORKERS = BAD BUSINESS = UNSUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Education for the poor people are addressed by the Government. Funds are allocated annually for this. However, and in accordance also with the PBEd’s analysis, most of the funds are placed in the pockets of corrupt officials. Therefore, problems in education will not be resolved.

This education from the government will only produce bad graduates, since facilities and teaching methods are bad. Which will also mean producing unprofessional people that will later join the labor force. If these people will be part of a particular company, vis-Ã -vis their educational attainment, the business will be bad, and thus will result to unsustainable development.

Aside from corruption, politics also affects the current system. And this does not only affect public schools, but also private schools. Because of lack support from the government (and not to mention the corrupt government officials who continuously corrupting these schools), private schools decide to increase their tuition fees, making students migrate to public schools, which is cheaper.

On the other hand, because of the initiative of PBEd, later, this equation could be achieved:

IMPROVED EDUCATION + FROM THE GOVERNMENT + PBEd = GOOD GRADUATES
GOOD GRADUATES = PROFESSIONALS = GOOD WORKERS = GOOD BUSINESS=
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

If PBEd will intervene, and if their objectives are all achieved, the government will be able to produce good graduates that are competent enough in competing with other people and thus will attain a growth in every business and thus will uplift the position of the country which will later achieve sustainable development.

But this could not be achieved by the PBEd alone, as according to the equation, the government must cooperate. And in cooperating, PBEd suggests that first, politics must be removed from education; second, an alliance must be established to promote the values and principles of educational reform and third, corruption must meet its end.

The 2009 Smart Wireless Engineering Education program or SWEEP is finally over. Ramon Isberto, Smart Communications Public Affairs Group head, said that this year’s competition’s theme focused on mobile applications that would be use for real-life disasters and emergency-related incidents, like earthquakes, floods, tsunamis and typhoons.

And to encourage more participants in the competition, Smart changed their rules regarding ownership of the applications submitted. Before, Smart owned the intellectual property of the students in previous competitions. This year, they only have right of first refusal for the first six months, after which the students can look for potential partners to help them develop the projects. This change would allow the students to pursue their projects after the competition.

It is also the first time that Smart tied-up with the Department of Science and Technology to identify projects that can be given funding for possible commercialization. “We hope to engage more schools in future competitions and encourage students to pursue careers in research and developments,” Isberto said.

And when the dust has settled, teams from two Ateneo universities emerged victorious, besting seven other schools to dominate the annual mobile application competition. Two students team came from Ateneo De Manila University and one from Ateneo De Davao University.

The team from Ateneo De Manila bagged the top prize of P500,000 pesos for their project called “Smart Goods” and another team from the same school won third place with their project “Iwas Baha” and took home P150,000. The team from Ateneo De Davao got the second place and won P300,000 for a project that combined global positioning system and a geographic information system.

Literally, Ateneo sweep the SWEEP competition. More that 70 teams submitted an entry in this year’s competition. The Ateneo De Manila University and Ateneo De Davao University would also receive cash equivalents in terms of grants. Seven other teams have received P30,000 as consolation prizes.

Thrasher TV offers a very innovative way of teaching people about things in businesses. Their audience in my opinion, are the teenagers who’s having a hard time understanding business terms.

One episode of Thrasher TV discussed about Stocks. The hosts first lay two technical definitions of stocks, and both contains highfalutin words that is hard to understand by an ordinary student. What the hosts did was to simplify it by making a diagram of what a stock is.

STOCK = SHARE = OWNERSHIP

I guess, that’s the easiest and simplest way of defining what a stock is. And that’s true, Stock simply means an ownership or share of a particular person in a company.

They also discussed NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange. They define the two by citing examples that will appear very effective for young students. Another good thing about how they give example is the fact that, the examples they gave was very timely and widely known and frequently encountered by ordinary people especially the students. Some of their examples are: Mcdonald’s, Starbucks, American Apparel and K-Mart.

NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange also takes some ticker symbols for the stocks. NASDAQ takes 4 letter ticker symbols, while New York Stock Exchange takes 1, 2, or 3 letter symbols. Some of the examples they gave was: PG (for Procter and Gamble) and AAPL (for Apple).

Thrasher TV will sure help the amateurs in the business to understand business terms easier. They discuss things that are relevant and commonly used in the business so as the person who would want to enter a venture or business will not have a hard time coping up when encountering business words or terms.

Thrasher TV is an effective tool in achieving knowledge about business. Students and the others will sure enjoy learning by using this teaching medium, especially now that more people are on line, so most of the time, reading books bores them a lot.

The Ateneo de Manila University is providing students the opportunity to develop into full-pledged entrepreneurs through their SoMBA program. SoMBA is the acronym for School of Management Business Accelerator Program, in this program the students are able to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and experience in entrepreneurship by allowing them to set up their own business ventures.

Some of the brands that were carried by fourth-year students through the SoMBA program are BOOSTA, GoldFingers and Bucket and Berries.

GoldFingers was created by Jaron Aaron Ginjie Abella, Caloy Bañez and Rani Roque. Their idea was to turn the ordinary Banana Chips into something that can compete with popcorn, nachos and fries. What they did was pair-up this sweet delicacy with chocolate.

“Ever since, we’ve been thinking about starting up our own business. Joining the SoMBA program gave us an opportunity to turn these plans into reality,” the group said.

GoldFingers product is the dipped banana fingers, they are banana chips in strip forms, and are sold for P30 to P40. They are available in Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate, Native Chocolate, Cinnamon Caramel and a special Ateneo flavored dip. You can visit their website at http://goldfingers.vze.com for more information.

Bucket and Berries, on the other hand, is a carabao yoghurt ice cream store. Behind it are the group of Ailee Canlas, Simone Banawa, Camille Aquino, Kristine Rey, Valerie Aquilino, Rina Tanjangco, Pamela Pebenito and Mara del Rosario, all Management Economics seniors.

The group’s bestseller is the Vanilla yogurt ice cream base with blueberries and cornflakes and also Mango yogurt ice cream base with strawberries and rice crispies. The ice creams are sold at P60 to P100, depending on the flavor.

‘SoMBA is a good opportunity to jumpstart entrepreneurial dreams. Being an entrepreneur isn’t just about gaining profits, it’s about contributing something to society by answering to the needs of the market,” Mara said.

Their website is http://www.buckettandberries.com and http://buckettandberries.multiply.com

BOOSTA, another product of SoMBA, is a coffee snack bar composed of chocolate-coated rice krispies. The group behind BOOSTA is composed of Gabs Garcia, Matthew Ong, Raffy Enriquez, Denis y and Ian Co.

Gabs explained that their product’s name came from the coffee bean robusta. “We developed our product after seeing a rapid increase in call center agencies. We wanted to penetrate that market by serving them what they need for the graveyard shift which is a boost of energy provided by coffee,” he added.

A bar BOOSTA! costs P20, one box with ten bars is sold at P180. For more information, you can contact them at the following numbers: Gabs Garcia (09178494953), Dennis Ty (09178455522) or Matthew Ong (09163918671).

Michael Phelps has been suspended by USA Swimming, the US’s governing body for competitive swimming, for three months. USA Swimming also withdraws the financial support for Phelps for the said three months period.

Hours before the suspension was handed down to Phelps, cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. issued a statement saying that it will not renew its sponsorship contract with the Olympic swimmer.

All of these were because of the picture which shows Phelps inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

USA Swimming officials said “This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousand o USA Swimming-member kids who look up to him as a role model.

For its part, Kellogg Co. will not renew Phelps’ contract with them. Company spokeswoman Susanne Norwitz said “Michael’s most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg. His contract expires at the end of February, and we have made a decision not to extend his contract.”

Phelps admitted the act and issued an apology last Sunday saying that he “engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment, I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me.”

This is not the first time Phelps has been in such a situation, he was arrested in 2004 for driving under the influence of alcohol in Salisbury, Maryland where he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months probation. He also issued an apology after the said incident.

The U.S. Olympic Committee has also issued a statement about the incident saying that Michael already acknowledged the mistake he made and already apologized for his actions. They believe that from this experience, Michael has already learned his lesson and soon will be able to consistently set the kind of example that a great Olympic champion would show.
