Online Visita Iglesia went down after reaching 58,000 visitors

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has recently beefed up its Visita Iglesia Online website to accommodate more visitors and to prevent what happened last year when the site crashed because it received more than 43,000 online visitors. This year, the CBCP said they expected the number of visitors to double.

Unfortunately, in spite of the upgrading done on the website, the Visita Iglesia Online site was reported to have crashed again after reaching more than 58,000 hits. As of 7:00 a.m. on Holy Thursday, the site had already at least 58,337 visitors.

As of Holy Monday, the site had only around 21,000 visitors. The number of visits appeared to peak late on Holy Wednesday when the figure jumped from 40,187 as of 6:35 a.m. to more than 50,000 as 10:000 p.m. on the same day.

It is even expected that the website traffic would even climb further during the so-called “Easter Triduum” or Paschal Triduum. The Easter Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday and ends on Easter Sunday. It celebrates the passion and death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday and His resurrection on Easter Sunday.

The Visita Iglesia Online site which was started last year by CBCP as an experiment was created for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and other Filipinos who are not capable of going out of their homes to physically the churches for the traditional Visita Iglesia during Holy Thursday.

This year, it was launched by CBCP on April 1 and features many improvements – additional churches, a YouTube introduction, catecheses on Lent, the Holy Week and Easter, and features like the Pasyon, Seven Last Words and homilies of different priests.

Last year the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) launched the Visita Iglesia Online to offer a virtual Holy Week experience, particularly to Filipinos overseas and devout Catholics who are physically incapable of leaving their homes. It was merely an experiment and not as a serious endeavor as it only featured seven churches.

This year, CBCP media director Msgr. Pedro Quitorio said they have beefed up the capacity of the website in anticipation of a large number of online visitors this Holy Week. Msgr. Quitorio affirmed that the Church hierarchy’s official news service had augmented the website to prevent it from crashing like what happened last year. An unexpected 43,000 visitors logged on to the website. This year, they are expecting the number of online visitors to double.

“It just shows that Filipinos, no matter where they go, will always be religious and the desire to celebrate the Holy Week is always there, too,” the monsignor told reporters.

Yesterday, Palm Sunday marked the start of the Holy Week. Devout Catholics went to their parish churches carrying palm leaves to commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

Last year, Msgr. Quitorio recalled that the website suddenly crashed. Checking what went wrong, they discovered that the website had already reached 43,000 hits. “So I thought, ‘This is serious and we cannot just ignore the 43,000 visitors just like that,’ so this year, we prepared for it. We expanded our servers that even if the figures doubled, it would not crash,” he added.

This year, the CBCP News added new features to the website as well. It now shows 14 historical shrines and pilgrimage churches in Metro Manila and nearby provinces to correspond with the 14 Stations of the Cross with reflections given by priests.

The Visita Iglesia Online included in its multimedia presentation the Manila Cathedral and San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila; Quiapo Church or the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene; Our Lady of Manaoag Church in Pangasinan; and the Agoo Church in La Union.

The website also has homilies delivered by some priests during the entire Lenten season this year and catechesis on Lent, Holy Thursday, Palm Sunday and the Kissing of the Cross, among other liturgical practices observed during the Holy Week.

And for Filipinos overseas who miss the “Pabasa,” Visita Iglesia Online has an audio recording of the 21 chapters of the “Pasyon,” the poetical narration of the life and sufferings of Christ.

Online gaming business plans to diversify

The Premier Entertainment Philippines Inc. (PEP) just got the nod of its shareholders to diversify from its main business of online gaming and into the mining, real estate and information technology. However, the company said it remains in search of its next venture as it assesses “feelers” from potential partners in its new businesses.

Anastacio P. Diaz of PEP said they want to move into a new venture that is not as tightly regulated as gaming business, which is overseen by the state-help Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. He stressed that whatever business they will go into, with any possible business partner, should have “synergy with company’s intentions.”

He said the search for a new business remains in the scouting stage. The final decision may be reached in 18 months.

PEP operates seven online casinos in Metro Manila that provide much of its cash. Each online casino carries an average of 50 terminals, said Diaz. PEP operates the online casino through its unit Digiwave Solutions Inc.

The gaming company hopes to improve its returns from its business. As of its last financial report, it stood at P47.7 million, which should have been P318,000 higher than the previous year’s had it not been for the recognition of a one-time gain from the sale of software by PEP in 2009 that dwarfed its 2010 revenues and more than covered all its cost for that year.

The company remains in the red. As of September, it financial report showed a nine-month loss of P41.25 million compared with an income of P7.65 million in the previous year. For the quarter, PEP’s loss of P6.67 million was lower than the P15.25 million loss in the previous year.

Diaz said they expect a 10 percent growth in revenue in its existing seven sites, even as the company intends to further increase the presence of online casinos. They are eyeing expansion in Manila, Quezon City, Las Piñas and Bulacan province, among others.

“We are able to dramatically reduce our operating expenses, and our e-games have been upgraded. We have a better management group. So we expect revenues to rise and operating expenses to drop,” said Diaz.

PCSO forfeits unclaimed Lotto prizes

Because they remained unclaimed after the one-year claiming period, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) has forfeited a total of P605,273,958.20 prizes from all online lotto games in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao draws. These forfeited prizes, according to the PCSO, were mostly minor prizes of the EZ 2, the 3-digit game, 4-digit game, 6-digit game, 6/42, the Mega Lotto, the 6/42 and 6/49 Super Lotto, and the short-lived Power Lotto game.

PCSO publicity and advertising manager Manny Garcia said the unclaimed prizes, representing about 55 percent of the total sales of the online lotto games, will be reverted back to the charity fund of the agency. “Unclaimed prizes revert and form part of the charity fund after one year,” he said, adding that the forfeited prizes would be a big help to pursue the PCSO’s vision and mission.

Garcia said, “Our mission is be a model government agency in carrying out its responsibility to provide medical and health services to the disadvantaged sectors of society through a professional workforce with integrity, competence, a deep sense of accountability and transparency in all its official transactions.” He said the PCSO is also extending financial assistance and contributions to certain national programs created by various legislative enactments.

The charity fund where the unclaimed prizes are placed, according to him, is a trust and liability account, created solely to finance and support the health programs, medical assistance and services and/or charities of national characters. Garcia also added that disbursements from this charity fund, regardless of the amount involved, do not only require the authorization of the PCSO Board of Directors but also the approval of the Office of the President.

Online gaming firm prepares for IPO

The IP E-Game Ventures, Inc., the online gaming unit of listed information technology firm IPVG Corp., is getting ready to go public after fulfilling the requirement of the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) to be listed by way of introduction last February of this year.

In its disclosure to PSE, the firm said, “In preparation for the mandated initial public offering of IP E-Game Ventures, Inc. through PSE, the company’s board had resolved to amend Article Seven of the Amended Articles of Incorporation, increasing the company’s authorized capital stock to up to 350 million shares from 100 million.”

“The board has authorized company president Jaime Enrique Y. Gonzales to negotiate with and engage the services of a financial advisor and/or underwriter to assist the corporation in its initial public offering (IPO).” However, the company did not provide other details, but last February, it said it would go public during the second half of the year.

IP E-Game Ventures got listed in the local stock exchange last February by way of introduction. This allows trading of stocks using the PSE’s facilities without raising money from the sale of new shares. However, it also required that the firm must be widely held and should conduct an IPO within 12 months. IP E-Game Ventures listed 33,545,554 common shares.

As of Friday’s trading, shares of IP E-Games closed at P40.50 apiece, down from P44.00 on last Thursday’s closing.

The company plans to strengthen its “massive multi-player online game” business, but said it will focus on “casual internet games.” In the early part of the year, the company said it has a total of 11 million subscribers, of which 3.5 million are active players or those who play the games two to three times a month.

An additional $9 will be imposed on non-immigrant visa application fees by the United States Embassy starting on June 4. The US Embassy cited the “increasing cost of providing highest-quality service” as the cause for the said increase.

This means visa application fees starting next month would be $140, from a previous $130, for tourist and business visas (B1 and B2 categories), seafarer and crew (C1 and D), student (F), and exchange visitor. Fees for work visas (categories H, L, O, P, Q, and R) would be $150.

The trader or investor visas (E) would be $390. For spouse, fiancé, and fiancée (K), it would be $350. for other non-immigrant categories, the fee would be $140. the machine-readable visa (MRV) fees of the US would increase worldwide, and not just in the Philippines.

Visa applicants who were able to get an appointment dates before June 4 would still pay the current rate of $131, while those with scheduled appointments on June 4 and the succeeding dates must pay the new rates.

“The Embassy requests that visa applicants who have already paid the MRV fee of $131 for an appointment scheduled after June 4 pay for the difference in fees at the same bank branch where they made the initial $131 payment,” the Embassy said. “You will need to present both blue MRV fee receipts when you arrive at the Embassy… You will not be allowed to enter the Embassy for your interview unless the full MRV fee has been paid,” it added.

The embassy also advised that that conversion of visa applications to online form has nothing to do with the worldwide increase in visa application fees. Applicants for US non-immigration visas started applying online since last May 24, as part of the embassy’s thrust to promote green technologies.
