Half-Filipino and world music sensation Bruno Mars made it to the TIME magazine’s list of 100 most influential people for 2011. Born Peter Gene Hernandez to a Filipino mother and Puerto Rican father, 25-year old Bruno Mars ranked no. 64 in the TIME Magazine’s list, as he joins an illustrious list of artists and activists, reformers and researches, heads of state and captains of industry who have affected people and their views across the globe.

Bruno Mars is best known for his songs “Just the Way You Are” and “Grenade.” He received six Grammy nominations and won the Best Male Pop Vocal award for the song “Just the Way You Are” at the recent Grammy Awards. His song “Nothing on You” was named Song of the Year for 2010 at the Soul Trains Awards.

He is regarded by his fellow artists as part of the new wave of musicians who do everything. Bruno Mars sing, play, write and produce.

“There are a lot of people in this world who can sing and play the piano and guitar. Hell, I sing and play the piano and guitar. But there’s something different about Bruno Mars. He has a musicality, a presence in his voice that I’ve never heard from anyone else,” said singer, rapper, musician and record producer B.o.B. when interviewed by TIME.

“When he performs live, nothing is prerecorded or fudged. It’s a straight up, classic performance. That’s so rare these days. We needed only two sessions to record “Nothin’ on You.” But when we perform live is when you really see our chemistry in action.” he added.

For the 3rd time, Sutherland Global Services Philippines is name Outstanding Employer of the Year by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA). The 2011 Outstanding Employer honor was given to Sutherland at the recent PEZA Investors’ Recognition Night, which reflects the value that the company gives its people.

From 150 employees in 2005, Sutherland today has more than 13,000 employees, a growth of over 86,000 percent. However, the secret of success of a business enterprise is not just the quantity of employees but also more importantly, the quality of employment.

With their 3rd outstanding employer award, the company is assured the honor of being included in PEZA’s Hall of Fame in next year’s awarding. This is a distinct recognition given only for a handful of companies which have won the award three times.

The Outstanding Employer Award is sponsored by the PEZA in cooperation with Philippine Ecozones Association. It is given to organizations that generate the most number of jobs, hold high regard for the welfare of their workers, and maintain harmony between labor and management.

Sutherland Philippine’s management team, chairman and CEO Dilip Vellodi said, “To win this prestigious award year after year is a very strong testament to the dedication of our employees in the Philippines, who have all helped in making this happen.”

Vellodi added, “Since our launch in 2005, our operations in the Philippines have become a strategic component of our global service delivery model. The country’s favorable economic environment, business-friendly government policies and above all the technically skilled and committed workforce have been driving forces in our ability to rapidly scale our operations across several locations in the country.”

The business process outsourcing (BPO) company was also awarded the Philippine Quality Award (PQA) for Commitment to Quality Management during the 11th PQA awarding rites conducted annually by the Department of Trade and Industry. Sutherland holds the honor of being the first and only BPO company who has been given the award in the last 10 years.

The popular football team Azkals will play in the country on July. Team coordinator Patrick Ace Bright confirmed on Thursday that the first qualifying match between Philippine’s Azkals and Sri Lanka for the 2014 FIFA World Cup will be held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila on July 3.

“This will not be the last time the Azkals will play here in the Philippines. We still have an upcoming match against Kuwait and we look forward to bringing the game here in Panaad (Park and Stadium),” Bright said. The Azkals will play a home and away game where the June 29 match will be in Sri Lanka.

Bright also added that by having the game in Manila, the will be able to transport its logistics to the country easily.

Philippine Football Federation (PFF president Mariano Araneta said that Panaad Stadium was also considered as a probably venue for the match against Sri Lanka. But he explained that PFF also wanted to hold the match here, since the country has not hosted an international match for quite some time. The latest of which was the 1991 Southeast Asian Games held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium where the Philippine Team reached semifinals.

Meanwhile, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman and PFF Advisory Council member Monico Puentevella said that since the capital of the Philippines is Manila, Manileños should be given the see the Azkals too. “I hope we don’t threaten the games here with the 30 percent amusement tax the next time it will be staged here. The Azkals will surely generate millions with this game in Rizal,” he said.

It could be recalled that last February, the match between the Azkals and Mongolia in Bacolod City, the Bacolod City Council passed a resolution charging the organizers with a 30 percent amusement tax on the ticket sales of the match. Fortunately, the city council waived the tax later upon the request of the PFF.

The Supreme Court (SC), in their last summer session in Baguio City, upheld the constitutionality of laws passed by the 11th Congress on the cityhood of 16 municipalities. The SC justices kept their 7-6 vote, dismissing the appeal of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) that various cityhood laws be declared unconstitutional.

The cityhood laws questioned were those contained in Republic Acts 9389, 9390, 9391, 9392, 9393, 9394, 9398, 9404, 9405, 9407, 9409, 9434, 9435, 9436 and 9491. However, the resolution was not yet released as it was still being circulated for signature of the magistrate, SC spokesman Midas Marquez said.

The LCP, as well as other sectors, have been criticizing the SC for flip-flopping on the case in its earlier rulings. This time, the High Court stood by its fourth ruling that the cityhood laws do not violate Article X Section 10 and the equal protection clause under Article III Section 1 of the Constitution.

SC junked the contention of LCP that the conversion into cities of the 16 municipalities violated Article X Section 10 of the Constitution, which states that “no province, city, municipality or barangay shall be created, divided, merged, abolished or its boundary substantially altered, except in accordance with the criteria established in the local government code and subject to approval by a majority of votes cast in a plebiscite in the political units directly affected.”

In its ruling last Feb. 15, the SC reversed itself for the third time and reverted back to its second ruling in December 2009, which held that respondent LGUs were qualified cityhood applicants before the enactment of RA 9009: “To impose on them the much higher income requirement after what they have gone through would appear to be indeed unfair.

“Thus, the imperatives of fairness dictate that they should be given a legal remedy by which they should be allowed to prove that they have all the necessary qualifications for city status using the criteria set forth under the LGC of 1991 prior to its amendment by RA 9009. Truly, the peculiar conditions of respondent LGUs, which are actual and real, provide sufficient grounds for legislative classification,” the SC said.

The SC’s new ruling on the case was a result of the change in vote cast by Associate Justice Jose Mendoza, who voted last year for the unconstitutionality of the laws but reconsidered his stand last February.

Republic Act 9009 took effect on June 30, 2001. It amended Section 450 of the Local Government Code by increasing the annual income requirement for conversion of a municipality into a city from P20 million to P100 million. The amendment was intended to discourage the rush of conversion into cities for the purpose of getting a larger share in the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA).

The 12th Congress however adopted Joint Resolution No. 29 which sought to exempt the 24 municipalities whose cityhood bills were not approved in the 11th Congress from the P100-million income requirement.

Only 16, out of the 24 municipalities, expressed intention to be converted into cities. The House and the Senate later approved the cityhood bills which lapsed into law on various dates from March to July 2007.

Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao started sparring at the Shape up Boxing Gym in Baguio City on Tuesday, focusing on the timing of his punches. This signals the start of his hard training in preparation for his May 7 title defense against Shane Mosley at the MGM Garden.

The undisputed pound-for-pound king spent 4 rounds of sparring against training partners, Shawn Porter and David Rodela, having 2 rounds with each. Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach said that his timing is not yet perfect. “He’s not 100% okay yet, especially in his timing,” Roach said. “He’s a little bit cautious with his moves, but that understandable. I can see him improving a lot before we leave for Los Angeles on Saturday.”

Pacquiao’s training session included a 6-round mitt work and several rounds with the heavy bag, double end bag, speed ball and conditioning work. Roach said Tuesday’s session was a testament of the champ’s willingness to undergo hard training.

The big bag, double end and the speed ball was not yet actually needed. But Pacquiao requested for them. This only means he’s serious in whatever he wants to do in training. The champ said he needs to recover from his down time boxing, which is why he is working so hard. His last fight was last November 14 where he clobbered Mexico’s Antonio Margarito to win his 8th world title, the World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight title.

He admitted that the still has to fine tune his timing. However, he assured his fans that there is still time for him to make adjustments. His sparring partners, Porter and Rodela, said Pacquiao’s still has this attitude of mixing it up with his opponents.

“He still possesses the power and speed like before,” said Porter, “I challenged him to toe-to-toe and he accepted the dare. He amazed me as usual.” Rodela added, “Yeah, same with me. I wanted to mix it up with him and he obliged.”

It is the season of school graduations and if you have a son or daughter graduating this year, I am sure you want to give something worthy of their time and hardwork they spent in school. How about buying them replica watches, especially for your high school or college graduates. I am sure that they are going to appreciate those cool looking watches because they are just like the original counterparts.

There are a lot of websites on the web offering those high quality replica watches that you can give as a gift to your sons or daughters. You have your choice of Breitling replica watches, Tag Huer replica, Christian Dior, Zenith, Versace, and the list goes on.

I am sure your graduate would proud wearing his graduation gift, whether in college if just graduated from high school, and in his new corporate world if he graduated from college. It would give a great image and get him a nice first impression.

At any rate, I am sure that they realize that you have already given up so much for them by sending them to school. A small token for their effort though, would still be appreciated. Congratulations to all graduates of 2011! And of course, congratulations to the proud parents of all graduates!

To beef up their line-up, the Philippine football team will be holding try-outs on April 9 to 10 at the Gellert Park in Daly City, near San Francisco. Team captain Aly Borromeo and defender Anton Del Rosario will conduct the tryouts, they are looking to recruit talents in the 15-24 age bracket. Borromeo and Del Rosario will supervise the tryouts, together with US college football coaches.

Del Rosario said, “The players are coming from all over. There were at least eight from the East Coast looking forward to the tryouts in New York City but we’ve asked them to fly to San Francisco instead so we can assemble the players all together. It’s more practical to hold the tryouts in the US than ask the players to fly all the way to Manila. We’ve got players coming in from Canada, too.”

Borromeo justified their plan to recruit from the US because bringing in players from overseas to suit up for the national team is a reality in the global game, “It happens all the time,” he said. “In our case, we’ve learned to adjust to each other. Players come just a few days before a match and leave right after. That’s how it is with a lot of national teams whose starts play for clubs in other countries. We’ve become familiar with each other. Coach Weiss doesn’t mind. As long as we’re winning, he’s happy,” Borromeo added.

He said he is also on the lookout for players who can see action with the under-23 squad at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Indonesia this November. Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, 21, reliever Christopher Camcam, 16, defender David Basa, 21, striker Yannick Tuason, 21, Fil-German Patrick Hinrichsen, 20, and Fil-Dutch Jason de Jong, 21, are among the players now in the under-23 pool.

The Azkals made history when they qualified for the first to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup proper cup tournament after placing second in the group stage in Myanmar last week. They drew with Myanmar and Palestine and then defeated Bangladesh.

Willie Revillame once again finds himself on the hot seat, this time for subjecting a 6-year old boy named Jan-Jan to what others said was public humiliation on his primetime TV5 show Willing Willie. A YouTube video of the kid dancing and gyrating his hips like a macho dancer has gone viral and has been shared on Facebook countless times. The video generated a lot of angry reactions on via social media and from a lot of bloggers as well.

Most of the comments on the video noted the audience who all were laughing together with the show’s host, Revillame, as the boy was dancing, even as tears started rolling down Jan-Jan’s cheeks. Revillame even asked the boy to repeat the dance when he returned to his place near him, where Revillame mimicked him as he danced, giving him P10,000 afterwards.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), compelled by the ordeal that the 6-year old boy went through, condemn Revillame’s action and asked for the censorship of the show. DSDW Dinky Soliman wrote to Manny Pangilinan asking for censure of Revillame and to stop having children on his show. She also sent MTRCB a copy of the letter she sent to Pangilinan.

The latest on the news was Willing Willie show producer, Revillame and TV5 have already issued a public apology on the said segment featuring the 6-year old Jan-Jan, and said that there was never any intention to humiliate or abuse him or any contestant on the show.

The apology continued that “Willing Willie” is a program conceptualized to bring joy and hope and shine the spotlight on ordinary Filipinos. The program aims to provide a venue for everyone to show their talents, tell their stories and make their dreams come true. This is the thrust of everyone involved in the program, particularly its host, Revillame. It ended with the TV station and Wil Productions expressing “profound regret” for any insensitivity on their part, and thanked all those who have expressed concern.

The Philippine government wasn’t able to do much to alleviate the plight of the three Filipinos who were caught for drug smuggling in China. They have been sentenced to death and the date of their execution would on March 30, 2011.

According to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Spokesman Ed Malaya, the Fujian People’s Court and Guangdong High People’s Court informed the Philippine Consulates General in Xiamen and Guangzhou that the death penalty will be carried out on Ramon Credo and Sally Villanueva in Xiamen, and Elizabeth Batain in Shenzhen. They will be executed via lethal injection.

Arrangements are being made now for their families to be able to depart for China and see their loved ones for the last time. President Benigno Aquino III have been apprised of the execution date, his deputy spokesperson said Filipinos would have to respect Chinese law.

The three apprehended for carrying heroin, on different occasions, upon their arrival to China; Credo, 42, was arrested on December 28, 2008 at the Gaoji International Airport in Xiamen for 4,113 grams of the prohibited substance; Villanueva, 32, on December 24, 2008 also in Gaoji Airport for carrying some 4,410 grams; and Batain, 38, at the Shenzhen Airport with 6,800 grams.

Smuggling 50 grams or more of heroin, or equivalent drugs, is punishable with death penalty by lethal injection under Chinese law.

The original execution dates of the three Filipinos were February 20 and 21, but was postponed as a result of the humanitarian visit to Beijing of Vice President Jejomar Binay on February 18. During his visit, Binay expressed the Philippines’ respect for Chinese law and “the verdict of the Supreme People’s Court” on the cases.

Malaya stressed that the Philippine government did everything it can and provided the three Filipinos all possible legal and consular assistance it need. He said the government their legal rights were respected and observed, and that their welfare protected from the time of their arrests and throughout the judicial process, up to this very day.

The South East Asian Airlines (SEAIR), in partnership with the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) is granting Filipinos a chance to win a dream vacation package for two at one of the country’s best year-round destinations, Batanes.

The contest dubbed, “Animated Short Tails,” contest is open to all Filipinos. Registration for the contest is free and forms can be downloaded at www.animahenasyon.com, and competition updates will be posted at the www.facebook.com/flyseair.

And due to insistent public demand, the deadline for the animation contest is extended to September 15, 2011. The awarding will coincide with the 5th Philippine Animation Festival, Animahenasyon, which will be on November 25, 2011.

Executive Director of ACPI Michael Kho Lim said they have been swamped with numerous requests from students and professionals alike to extend the deadline. “We understand that content creation for animation takes time so we decided to accommodate their requests. That way, awarding and celebration can coincide with this year’s Animahenasyon,” he said.

The entries to the animation contest should promote SEAIR and its destinations and at the same time, communicate SEAIR’s positioning as the Philippines’ premier leisure airline. The entries can in cel animation, line drawing, stop motion objects or animated objects, stop motion puppets, stop motion clay or claymation, sand on glass, paint on glass, cut-outs, pixilation, 2d computer or flash animation, 3D computer, or a combination of the above forms. The video entry should have a total duration of 30 seconds.

There are two categories for the contest – the professional and the student category. For the “Animated Short Tails” contest, submission of entries and other inquiries, interested parties my contact the ACPI at 817-2727 local 108 or email them at animahenasyon@gmail.com.

I got an invitation from a friend to go on a vacation to Mallorca. He told me that he already got reservations for villas in Puerto Pollensa and that we will be leaving in two days. And I said, “Where?!” Honestly, this is the first time for me to hear about Mallorca and Puerta Pollensa, and they do not sound like you can get there via land route from where we are now.

So I searched for it on the net, and I was surprised that it is in Spain. I have never been there, and I really do not think that my friend have been there before too. And when I asked him what’s up, and what’s with this trip to Mallorca.

But instead of answering me, he told about the beautiful villas in Pollensa and he showed the pictures on the brochures that he received from the mail. And through the course of our discussion, I learned that he will be meeting a person there for a possible joint venture project.

It figures. My entrepreneur would never travel far just for leisure. I knew there was more to the trip just than a vacation. He just does not want to tell me that it’s work because I might not go with him. Anyway, it is an all-expense paid trip. I am not complaining.

I guess, I should just be supporting my friend in his planned joint venture with his prospective partner. He did not tell me though whether the joint venture project will be there in Mallorca or it will be for a project here in the Philippines.

Anyway, I am sure my entrepreneur friend will not make me stay long there because I need to work here. Besides, the longer he tagged me along, the more expenses he will incur.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said that as of yesterday, there were still no reported Filipinos who have been injured or killed in the earthquake that hit Japan last Friday, although the department said that there about 4,500 Filipinos who are believed to have been affected by the disaster.

The DFA in Manila said they still haven’t received any report of any casualty or death from the Philippine embassy in Tokyo, Philippine consulate general in Osaka, and the four honorary consulates in Japan, Sapporo, Morioka, Nagoya and Naha. DFA spokesman Eduardo Malaya said most of the destruction occurred in Sendai, near Morioka.

Since Friday, the DFA in Manila have been receiving calls from worried relatives of Filipinos in Japan. DFA Undersecretary Rafael Sequis said they are having a hard time to establish contact with Filipinos in Japan because the communication lines are still down. Malaya said, “We’re also monitoring those people finder open databases and cross-checking our database with them once we have information about the individuals in those databases we will also be updating what we have.”

Reports from the Philippine consulate general in Osaka said that there is minimal damage in the southern and western regions of Japan. “So far those who have relatives within this area do not have to worry. Only those who may have something to worry about would be those in the Sendai area,” Malaya said.

He assured the public that the Philippine embassy in Tokyo is capable of immediately responding to calls for help because it is one of the larger Philippine embassies in the world having 50 personnel and seven officers. There are about 225,000 Filipinos in Japan, most of whom are residing in the central regions.

The Japanese government is still assessing the extent of damage brought about by the tsunami which followed the magnitude 8.9 quake. As of yesterday, Japanese media emergency broadcasts reported 432 confirmed deaths (202 in Iwate, 83 in Miyagi and 82 in Fukushima), 1,128 injuries and 725 missing persons. Names and nationalities of the victims were still unknown as of press time.

Iwate, Fukushima and Miyagi were the hardest hit. All are located in the Tohoku Region in northeastern Japan.

Jesus Vicente-Garcia, executive vice-president and branch banking head of Philippine Veterans Bank, believes that time deposit remains to be one of the simplest, safest and most rewarding investments . Despite the many investment options available in banks, Garcia explained that a time deposit is a sound option to grow one’s investment because it enjoys higher interest rates.

Compared to a regular savings account, a time deposit is assured of a maximized return. Garcia illustrated a P500,000 investments on Veterans Bank’s Maxi-Return Time Deposit as an example. In their time deposit, a monthly compounding interest rate of six percent will net for the depositor an interest amount of about P174,000 at the end of five years. The actual interest amount will depend on the date the time deposit was opened.

The bank EVP was quick to add that the interest rate isn’t the only reason why a time deposit is a viable option. He said, “Aside from the high interest rate that you’ll get on your time deposit, it’s also a safe way to grow your money. Your investment is intact from the start as a time deposit is not driven by market factors like investment in stocks, or in mutual funds, or UITFs (unit investment trust fund).”

Garcia also added that time deposits are covered by the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. (PDIC) guarantee. Being a traditional bank product, they guaranteed up to P500,000 per depositor. UITFs are not covered by PDIC guarantee.

Short term time deposits are advisable for entrepreneurs who would like to get higher interest rates than a regular savings account, yet allow them flexibility to have the funds available should they need them in their business. A long term time deposit, on the other hand, is best for those who can afford to have money tied up for a long time, and without immediate need. Longer terms obviously would higher interest rates.

An entrepreneur friend got an invitation for a business conference from his partner in Northbrook, Illinois. He was hesitant at first because he do not know much about the place, but his partner assured him that he will be providing him Limo Service in Northbrook IL so he does not have to worry a thing once he is around town.

My friend never doubted of his partner’s capability. He knew him to be a big time, and yet a down-to-earth entrepreneur in Illinois, but he was really surprise that he took him as a partner in his business. More than just a partner, he even served as my friend’s mentor.

But to be providing him a Northbrook Limo as a service is just too much for my friend. But being his partner-mentor, my friend could not just say no to him and flew to Illinois. And rightly so, he was picked up at the airport by the promised limousine which took him to his partner’s place.

There he found out that there wasn’t really any business conference, his partner just want to invite to his place and show him around town. One of his partner’s business there is providing limousine service, which explained why he can afford to provide such to my friend. The business name? It’s Limousine Service Northbrook. And my friend indeed had a great time in his stay in Illinois.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is lobbying for a legislation that they believe would help minimize, if not totally eradicate, cybercrime. The NBI is proposing a law that would regulate laptops, SIM cards, and other devices which are used to connect to the Internet. According to NBI Anti-fraud and Computer Crimes Division chief Palmer Mallari, regulating the use of laptops and other devices “would help law enforcement agencies in the fight against cybercrime.”

In his proposal though, Mallari admitted the fact that law enforcers often have a difficult time tracing specific users who connect to the internet through laptops and wireless connectivity. He said, if the government would require users to register their devices used in connecting to the internet, law enforces will have an easier time tracing those who may be involved in certain cybercrimes.

Migdonio Congzon, NBI Computer Crimes Unit chief, said that 50 percent of Internet connections in the country is wireless.

This early, two senators have already expressed opposition to it – Senator Edgardo Angara, chairman of the Senate science and technology committee that conducted a hearing on cybercrime bills on Monday, and Senator Francis Escudero, who was also present during the said hearing.

Angara said, “I can foresee tremendous opposition to this,” during the hearing, while Escudero called the proposed regulation as an “overreaction,” adding that individual laptop owners would find the registration of their devices too much of a task.

Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, also pushed for the mandatory registration of SIM cards last month. Sotto made the proposal after initial investigations showed that a mobile phone has been used to detonate a bomb inside Goldliner bus which bound for Quezon City, killing five people.
